Fly6 bicycle tail light with blinky lights and HD video recording to capture accident footage

The Fly6 was launched on Kickstarter earlier this year, and already a new version is coming that’ll improve everything about the already good original (shown in background).

The optics and camera improve for better picture quality. It’s still 720p, but the hardware is improved to make the video more crisp. The original lens was overmolded, which can create distortion. The new one is made separately then ultrasonically bonded to the light case. Battery life jumps to 6 hours, and lumen output to about double the original’s 15 lumens.

It’s treated inside and out with a nano coating, so even if water gets inside it’ll still be fine. It’s also a bit shorter, which will help it fit more frames. The upgrades come at a price – retail jumps to $199 during pre-order, from $159 for the original. That gets you USB rechargeable Li-Ion battery with six hour run time, 8GB MicroSD card (you can install a larger one to extend recording time), and simple looping video recording that saves in the event of an accident.

The name, BTW, comes from a mashup of two relevant sayings: Fly on the wall and Watch your six. You definitely want both while riding on the road, and now you’ve got it. The new version will be available later in the year, at which point the retail price goes in effect at $249.

I have one of the origial cameras from backing the campaign. It works really well, but one concern I was hoping they would address in future production runs was the limited mounting options. As it stands now, the unit can only by installed (via rubber bands) to a seat post. However, as a long-distance commuter and touring cyclist who uses both a saddle bag and a trunk, I would really appreciate a rack mounting bracket. Oh well.

Kickstarter See.sense 2.0 got 155 lumens.
Why don’t u guys just increase lumens to at least 80 or something ?

6 hours run time is a lot better than some, but 6 hours at new means considerably less soon after you bought it, so… is the battery easily removable so you can carry a spare?

Also, please tell me they got rid of that ridiculous rotating flashes around the bezel that the first one had.

can’t work how to easily attach it to a dually using a dropper post

That’s in USD 🙁
$240 in AUD, bit rich for a camera that only points one way.

I’ve been considering one of these for a year or two; but I can’t get over the fact that a rear-facing camera will be of little use in a car-bike accident if the driver takes off in a (Canadian) province where cars only have rear-mounted plates 🙁

Would love to see this exact same light but with a white / clear reflector and bar mount option. Front and rear camera’s with built in “see me” lights sounds great.

I’ve been using this guy for months now! Super easy to use/upload and discrete camera. It’s nice knowing that if something happens while commuting or training that I’ll have record of it. I totally recommend it.

can I trade in my old one for a new version? That would be great to at least get a little credit toward a new one!

I have an original from the Kickstarter which I use for commuting. I have no issues with it and have been surprised how well it functions for a Rev A product from a start up. It has been fun on occasion to review the footage of when I pass a slow/new roadie while commuting. Very predictable result occurs as they immediately jump on my wheel only to be dropped a little later on.

With all the out-group bias against cyclists in the media and law enforcement it is nice to have some clear and transparent accounting of events that transpired if an incident ever happens.

Waiting for them to create a front camera/light as well!

Thanks for all your comments. I’d like to address some of them here:
– the limited mounting options are actually awesome mounting options because they provide a solid platform to capture steady footage (the seat post). Other mounting options (like panniers & helmets) don’t provide steady footage which is what we want to give you!
– Lumens: if we only made a light, of course we could knock it out of the park like the very awesome See.Sense however we also have a camera that we need to consider and balancing up to six hours of filming and lights is not easy. If we upped the lighting power, we would effectively decrease the camera function.
– the battery life of the new Fly6 is considerably better than Fly6 Original. Not just in providing more time but also the quality of the battery is much improved meaning a longer lasting and robust battery life.
– rotating besel light is still there although somewhat more subtle than in Fly6 Original. It stays because we need to know when the camera is on…this is the indicator.
– In terms of cost, if you were to add up the functions and then get those functions using other items, they would cost you much more, would take up more space, be more complicated to use, would not last for up to six hours, would not have incident protection, would not include nano technology and not be designed just for cyclists. If you feel that with those things considered that it is not good value then we would have to accept your opinion.
– Of course if there are no plates on the front of a vehicle the only identifying features would be make, model & color of the vehicle. We are designing a solution for the front of a bike that would suit these situations.
– we don’t have a trade in system but we are currently offering $50 off the regular price to pre-order….note that the discount ends early next week!

Thanks again for your comments and if you have more or want to ask us direct…feel free to contact us at info@fly-lites.com

I only purchased one at first to give it a good test before buying one for the front of the bike.
Are some of the original units still available for the original price? I’m happy with this one and wouldn’t mind buying another.

Great to see Andrew reply, the old Fly6 works for my bikes but not on my dedicated commuting bicycle that has a rear rack.
It would be good see the device have mounts to cater to commuting cyclists too.
