UK upstart Hunt Bike Wheels who we introduced to you just 2 months ago is moving quickly and has already expanded their wheel offerings from the disc road wheels we showed before, to add three more road wheel sets. These wheels deliver wide, tubeless-ready, aero profile rims built up with solid components for reasonably light affordable wheelsets that should be great all-arounders.

As Hunt are in their first season of product delivery (with production proudly in cycling hub Taiwan) and haven’t sorted out what their demand will be, they are selling all their wheels on a preorder basis to be delivered worldwide in June. Check out the wheel details and pricing…

Of the three wheels, two share a 28mm x deep 22mm wide rim, while the third expands to 31mm x 24mm:

Hunt 4Season Aero Road: 28x22mm 6061-T6 rim with 17mm internal, and 1589g for £279
Hunt Race Season Aero Road: 28x22mm 6061-T6 rim with 17mm internal, and 1420g for £399
Hunt Race Season Aero Wide Road: 31x24mm Niobium/Alu-T10 rim with 19mm internal, and 1480g for£459

All rims are designed with a wide rim bed to create a wider tire profiles, making them fatten up light 23mm tires, but also be great for bigger road and cross tires. All hubs are of Hunt’s design and use Pillar aero spokes; with lighter hubs, straight pull spokes, and alu nipples on the Race wheels. Wheels come fitted with tubeless sealing base tape, tubeless valves, and external cam QR skewers, plus spare spokes and a Pillar spoke nipple tool.

One other interesting feature is that Hunt can provide the wheels with Schwalbe One Tubeless road tires in either 23/25/28mm widths for another £90. That’s £30 less than suggested retail and also includes having them set up tubeless and with sealant, eliminating any tubeless installation hassle.

Pre-order now with just 20% down, refundable up to a week after you receive the wheels (assuming you return them), so almost no risk to try them. And shipping is free worldwide. Their first disc-brake wheel preorder sold out in just a day and a half, so act fast. (Although the disk wheels can also be ordered again for the next mid June delivery.) Hunt’s aim to deliver affordable high-performance wheels seems promising. We might have to get a set ourselves to try them out.

Stop trying to make road tubeless happen. It’s not going to hap-

Actually, if the industry tells us we want it, it’ll happen and you’ll have to buy it because they’ll stop stocking, then making, regular tyres.

“Wheels come fitted with … plus spare spokes and a Pillar spoke nipple tool.”
I must say: they have a lot of confidence in their wheels…

Is the company founder’s name Mike?

@Chris Just like they stopped making clincher tyres for MTB! Oh wait, no, they didn’t.

Cory Benson + 1.

Supplying spares is great service! Allways take’m with you when traveling. And remeber: Mavic would charge you ~5$ for just one spoke…

Hope does the same with its pre-made wheels, supplying a couple of spare (in the case of the wheels I bought, traditional J’d and butted) spokes and nipples to go. I think it’s a really, really good idea, and it doesn’t make me think my wheels are going to fall apart. It’s excellent attention to detail, and great customer service. They’re in my toolbox ready to go. More wheel manufacturers should do it.

When I build wheels for people I always include 3 of each spoke length I use, the same number of nipples, and the specs on spoke tension. It’s just good form.

Not sure why road tubeless isn’t going to happen???

I have been riding road tubeless for close to two years now and will never look at going back. All the people against it are just ignorant and stuck in their old way unwilling to change.

If you don’t like it don’t ride it…

All the road tubeless haters are just jealous I did 5,000 miles on nasty potholey roads last year, and didn’t get a single flat.

Those wheels look great, reasonably priced and reasonably light, and I would imagine that [gasp] you can use them with clinchers and tubes as well.

@chris, you can still buy Gatorskin’s in 27″. I think the standard road clincher will manage to survive the tubeless corporate conspiracy.

‘If you don’t like it don’t ride it… ‘

Agreed. Now follow your own advice and stop calling the tube and tire folk ignorant.

They are Novatec hubs…

Take a look at this side-by-side comparison I made (Vision Team 25/30 are same hubs too, but I couldn’t find a good pic to add them too): http://s17.postimg.org/q6z8lzc3j/novatec_hubs.jpg

I also wouldn’t call them true tubeless wheels… they’re just standard rims that have rim sealer tape on them and a couple valve stems thrown in.

thats fine tho. i have a pair pacentis with novatec hubs, ~500USD assembled by a LHS in the US, good service, has the rim tape and works perfect tubeless.
I don’t think there’s a big advantage not to use tape.

Same on my MTB (‘except its carbon and hookless because the roval’s are decently priced actually..)

@tehcrash

Actually pretty hard to find non tubeless compatible 26 inch tyre for my 2014 Stumpjumper FSR (so, not an old bike) here in Singapore. Tubeless compatible are a pain in the backside to mount, and a bit too heavy.

Good to see they have a freehub spline protector to stop cassettes from digging in so hard and destroying the freehub body eventually.

I had that Novatec A141SB front hub and wore the bearings out in 300 miles.

Hi Everyone, thank you all for the comments. Just a couple of bits of extra info:

@Ryan good spot. We’re only a start-up so our quantities aren’t yet big enough to have our own design hubs yet but we are working with a project engineer at a university here in the UK and will have more info to release in the future. The Novatec hubs performed very well in our testing, offered some excellent specs and as you spotted they are proven and trusted by many big brands and product managers I know personally, so we decided to work with them.
Regards the tubeless rim profile; all our rims have horizontal tubeless shoulder steps which are different to a normal clincher rim which has a single curve from edge to edge. The shoulder steps help the tubeless tyre to seal easily and mount safely, especially when running lower pressures such as 80-90psi. If you’re referring to our rims having spoke holes with rim tape, this is a choice we made for a few reasons. It’s difficult to build wheels with no spoke holes so the retail price would be higher and of course replacing spokes can be a real faff for the customer. Plus leaving in the material for each spoke hole adds weight, our rim tape is actually lighter than the material removed (11g for two layers). The big brands who have sealed rims use their own rim extrusions which have a slightly thinner wall to reduce the weight and maximise on the extra strength from no spoke holes. We’ll listen to customer feedback and consider this once we’re at the volumes which would warrant it. Please do let me know any more views on this as listening to riders is the best way for us to make better products.

@Alex our front hub has been upgraded to EZO Japanese bearings from the standard NBK bearings. Obviously I can’t promise any particular performance or mileage as it is of course effected by weather, washing, road surface, rider weight etc. We have tried our best spec the best performance bearings and hubs we can without creating wheels that are too expensive for normal riders like ourselves.

@YoMamma – you should have seen some of our logo options, a wheel shaped “H” and “unt” could have caused a proper scandal 🙂

For a few of the road tubeless comments – We totally understand that road tubeless is harder work and is only for a few of us who don’t mind the faff. We have no plan to replace clincher tyres (as if we could we’re too small) and our wheels work with them well. We totally respect clincher users and still use them ourselves, mostly for racing on carbon rims, but testing tubeless too. Having been MTBers for a long time, as well as road riders, we have been through all the tubeless learnings and appreciate some of their positive aspects. One of the core benefits for us is puncture reduction. Our local roads have a lot of flint gravel which finds it’s way into our tread (even Gator Hardshells) and has driven us mad with punctures, tubeless just seals around the little blighters. As I say, tubeless is likely suited to a few riders in specific situations, but we’re not aiming massive so a few riders buying our wheels will keep us going. Tubulars are still here decades after clinchers took the forefront for most riders. I don’t see it as a battle between systems more a case of it’s good to have the right equipment options available on the market for certain types of riding or roads and totally understand if tubeless isn’t for you.

We really do appreciate reading all the comments as that’s how we learn. Anyone please do feel free to contact us if you have any questions or even just want a chat. All contact details are on our site.

Thanks again all,
Tom Marchment – HuntBikeWheels

These wheels look nice! I am a big fan of Road Tubeless and love to see more options out there. For the life of me I can’t imagine why Zipp and Mavic haven’t got on board yet? I would bet they have products in the works and hopefully Mavic will at least adapt some wider rim profiles into their lineup. Good Luck with your product launch and I hope to see more from you guys in the future!
