Helmets. Love ’em, or hate ’em, they’re a fairly common piece of cycling gear. In spite of improvements in comfort and fit, many cyclists still choose not to wear one when out for a ride. Gloria Hwang was the same way. Never a fan of wearing a helmet, the loss of a friend to a bicycling accident made her question just why she didn’t want to wear one. That introspection led to the launch of Thousand – a “design driven lifestyle brand with one mission, to reinvent the bike helmet.”

While calling it a reinvention might be a stretch, the Thousand helmet does bring some vintage motorcycle inspired style to the table, along with a few other interesting features…

For us, the most interesting feature of the new lid is their patent pending PopLock. Anyone who has ever wanted to lock up their helmet to their bike knows that putting the lock through the straps won’t really cut it. Instead, Thousand created an access port large enough for a Ulock to pass through that is covered by a magnetic plug when not in use. They’re even backing it with a Bike Thief Guarantee – if your helmet gets stolen while locked to your bike, they’ll replace it (subject to terms and conditions of course).

Otherwise the helmet is a classy design that draws inspiration from vintage moto helmets and travels. Built with 7 air vents that feed internal cooling channels, Thousand claims you get all of the cooling without a sci-fi design. To add to the premium look the helmets use vegan leather straps matched with a magnetic buckle system.

Kickstarter_Colorway

Complete with a matte rubberized finish, Thousand helmets are available in 3 colors along with a Kickstarter Only hand painted Stay Gold edition.

Sizing

Offered in three sizes, Thousand helmets start at $75 through their Kickstarter which runs through June 11th, with product expected to ship by November.

Sweet, love that look. Can’t imagine them being cool enough during the summer though.

Here’s a solution without a problem. Noone steals helmets.

@Frank, where do you live?

In SF, you will get anything stolen if it is not locked down.

My u-lock fits great through the properly vented helmet I own.

frank, I wish I lived wherever you live! Helmets most certainly do get stolen. I don’t get the point of this helmet though, since it still flattens your hair down during a commute to work. It seems like something for the hipster crowd who think that performance helmets dont complement their carefully crafted ironic wardrobe and leather fixie accessories. I’d be curious to see what happens to those leather straps after a month of sweat and rain. Oh wait I forgot, hipsters don’t actually ride in the rain—or break a sweat.

“vegan leather”: Finally someone is putting vegans to good use. Still, I think this is a tad morbid.

Never heard of a helmet being stolen.

Nice air vents…oh wait, there aren’t any. This helmet got hit with the ugly stick.

This is like a designer BMX helmet.

Locking a helmet through the Y-shaped part of the strap is usually good enough. The strap is not that easy to cut, and even if they cut it, they now have a useless helmet. If they just want to vandalize your helmet, they can do it in many ways that don’t require taking it, which is why motorcycle helmets are locked through the D-rings on the straps, instead of having some weird hole on them for locking.

Gotta love that rubberized finish… When I hit the hood of your car I want my head to stick to it.

Love the style. Sort of zooted up Skateboard with a dash of style. Takes to dorky cyclist look to acceptable levels. WIN WIN

You might get helmet hair, but at least the thousand voices in your head will be free. Scanner chic for cyclists? (Opens his eyes inside a car, sees his broken bicycle lying across the bonnet. “We’ve won.”)

These days, helmets ‘have’ to be light, and sometimes, camera mount, friendly. I like the general look of these helmets, but the lockable feature isn’t a huge selling point.

I like the simple look, and it seems to have a smaller profile than other helmets, which look huge and unwieldy on the head. I assume some sort of styrofoam is used as the impact material? There is no indication of what the inside of this helmet looks like.

If helmet makers want more people to wear helmets, they need to design something without using a gigantic chunk of styrofoam. Or use something different, like layers of cork.

At any rate, this one looks like a step in the right direction.
