Santa Cruz Chris King 40th anniversary 5010 mountain bike

While Chris King’s products haven’t received a lot of OEM spec on Santa Cruz’s bikes over the years, they have been long-time partners on the Syndicate racing team. In 2016, Chris King celebrates their 40th anniversary, so SCB decided to do a little something special.

This limited edition 5010 will get a complete set of Chris King’s special Olive Crate components that debuted at NAHBS and themselves are going to be very limited in quantity. The components get a special brushed finish over the olive green anodization, then etched with anniversary logo and graphics. The rest of the bike is painted to accentuate the color scheme, including matched graphics on the Rockshox fork. Check out the complete build and details below…

The Santa Cruz 5010 is a 130mm travel 27.5 trail bike, and this one comes with their top level CC carbon frame.

Other spec includes Race Face Next SL cranks with SRAM XX1 group, Easton ARC 27 rims, Maxxis Minion 2.3 tires, SRAM Guide Ultimate brakes, Rockshox Pike RCT3 fork and Fox Float Performance Elite rear shock.

Claimed weight for the complete bike is 26.8lb (12.2kg), retail is $8,999 and only 40 will be built.

A fitting tribute to a component legend, but $9K before taxes? Ouch.

Like the idea, but the frame color chosen to “accentuate” the CK doesn’t complement it at all.

Not my cup of tea at all. I like my blingy anodized parts to contrast with the frame color so that they really stand out. This bike is way too sedate and understated. It’s perfect for the upper middle class professional that drives a silver BMW SUV to a beige mini mansion. Expensive but boring.

Huh. Does the 5010 usually require a external bearing lower cup? That’s getting to be pretty rare.

Santa Cruz uses a threaded bottom bracket on all but their Stigmata frame.

Given Chri’s recent comments on Far Eastern manufacturing, I wonder if they irony is lost on him that his celebration edition parts are bolted to chunk of far eastern carbon? Seems an odd choice of frame, parts made in honour of 40 years of US manufacturing should be mounted to a US made frame.

Sure, except that Santa Cruz stopped making their frames in Portland years ago and now only sell Taiwanese and Chinese bikes.

Gorgeous bike. although I’d be happy with a lower-priced custom steel hardtail with those Chris King limited color components – heck, even with a rigid fork, in a nice matte brown or tan. Onza Skinwall 27.75″x2.4″ tires and a controlled-flex carbon seatpost/handlebar is all the suspension I need for my area.

So as far as I can tell, that Santa Cruz frame uses a threaded bb shell, the race face Next SL Cinch crank uses a 30mm bb spindle, and Chris King doesn’t make a threaded bb for a 30mm spindle.

Amp – It’s the new T47 BB, threaded and built in several versions to accomodate a bunch of different spindle types.

that is the sweetest color scheme in the history of santa cruz bikes… if only a Bronson… (my pink Bronson would be out the door in a heartbeat!)
