Fixie culture may not be what it once was, but thanks to a resurgence in track racing and fixed gear racing on the streets, the bikes are still here. Only this time, many of the companies that sort of came about during the fixed gear craze are building lighter, more racy bikes that are just as at home on the track or on the street.

For State Bicycle, the Contender has been one of their most popular models. Naturally, the Contender II is built to be a fast ride, fixed or free…

Starting with a Reynolds 520 chromoly steel frame, the frameset is completed with an Essor USA carbon fork with an aluminum steerer (Essor is a carbon components brand that was founded by the team behind State Bicycle). The build kit is simple but light and effective with a SRAM S100 Track crank and Powerspline BB, FSA Orbit MX headset, deep V wheels with sealed bearing hubs, and the ability to upgrade multiple components at the time of purchase.

carbon forks on classic steel lines always ruin it for me.

Definitely an improvement over Contender I, and it holds up well compared to offerings from some other companies. I would spring for it myself if the head tube angle were a little steeper, the wheels lighter, and it didn’t have unsightly braze-on rack mounts on the seat stays.

Road fixie, not a track bike.
