EB16: DMR cranks up VTwin clipless pedal, popular V8 platform gets an overhaul

DMR might be best known for their platform pedals, but soon, they’ll be bringing their platform expertise to the world of clipless. Why? Mostly because their athletes weren’t happy with any of the clipless pedals on the market. There are a number of pedals with great features, but finding that perfect combination meant taking it upon themselves to create it. The new VTwin is still in prototype form, but when it’s finished it should check all of the right boxes…

At the center of the VTwin is a SPD style clipless assembly that rotates on a spring loaded axle similar to the Shimano pedals. DMR mentioned that the SPD patent has expired which allows them to take advantage of the design in the center of the pedal. Where the VTwin differs is on the outer cage. Due to the difference in height of various shoe soles, there isn’t always a great connection between the shoe and pedal. To fix that the VTwin has adjustable nylon spacers with additional shims that can be installed underneath. This allows users to tune the height of the platform and dial in the perfect fit.

Additionally, there are 7 tuneable pins per side and a serviceable bearing system that rolls on chromoly steel axles.

When it’s available, the VTwin will be offered in multiple colors and should even have a ti axle option to make it one of the lightest pedals in its class. Price, availability, and weight, TBD.

For years, the V8 has been DMR’s best selling model. Practically setting the standard for concave platform feel, the pedal is getting a major overhaul which should make it even more loved.

Not only does the new V8 V2 offer a larger platform, it also includes a much slimmer profile thanks to a new serviceable dual DU bushing system. The die cast aluminum pedals use a chromoly steel axle, and use 10 traction pins per side with a claimed weight of 480g per pair and retail of £37.99.

Available in multiple colors, the new V8 will be sold along side the Classic V8 in black and silver only with 9/16″ or 1/2″ axles for $35.95.

Not sure what to make of a DMR clipless pedal, it feels rather like the end of the world.

Changing the V8 from ball bearings to bushings won’t “make it even more loved”. More drag and more wear.
