Carolina Velodrome Association

The Carolina Velodrome Association is one step closer to opening a new velodrome in Rock Hill, SC.  The City Council approved the Memorandum of Understanding, and now it’s a process of checking off the to-do list on the MOU.  Spencer Lueders, the man behind this project, says riders still need to write, email and call their council members (contact list here, sample letter here) to convince them that this project will be a great asset to the community.  Read more for our interview with Spencer regarding the timeline of action steps and when we’ll be able to ride!

BIKERUMOR: What’s the timeline for next steps?
SPENCER: We have a follow up meeting with City staff tomorrow (9/3) to start breaking down the tasks.  Some items are due by November, others by next April.

BIKERUMOR: Is there another council meeting where further action will be decided?
SPENCER:  Yes, they will have another chance to discuss during the November meeting, if they choose to do so.

BIKERUMOR: What are the next objectives/goals/tasks that have to be completed before the next council meeting or in order to keep the project on track?
SPENCER:  We will find that out tomorrow (9/3), but I expect we will need the letters of support from USA Cycling (I will seek one from ATRA as well), and a more precise timeline of funding and management operations.

BIKERUMOR: Assuming everything continues to progress, what is the anticipated date to break ground?
SPENCER:  Design would begin in 2009, break ground in 2010, and ride in 2011.
