Aheadset Introduces Simpler, Interchangable Headsets

Cane Creek announced an overhaul of their Aheadset headset system, offering simpler, more convenient installation and servicing by maximizing parts interchangeability while at the same time minimizing the number of unique parts. Cane Creek says that with just 18 unique parts in the system, 11 different headset configurations can be assembled from the six base models.

The new line, which is set to be available mid-April, will include six standard, boxed models. Traditional threaded and threadless models will come in both 1″ and 1-1/8″, and the ZeroStack and Integrated threadless models will come in 1-1/8″ models.

But the commonality of parts makes the Aheadset® system adaptable to a number of unique headset configurations beyond the 6 standard models. A universal small parts kit will allow for interchangeability of parts for a potential of 11 different configurations. Notably, the system will allow for a ZeroStack threaded assembly with either a 1″ or a 1-1/8″ fork, along with the ability for forks with 1″ steer-tubes, threaded or threadless, to be used on a frame with a 1-1/8″ headtube.

Along with interchangeability, simplicity was a major goal for the redesign. For threadless configurations, both the cone and crown race are the same part, and the compression ring and top cover are integrated, forming one part. For threaded configurations, the adjusting cone includes splines so that it can be adjusted using a standard external bottom bracket wrench, hook spanner, or by hand, eliminating the need for headset wrenches.

All models will have a $23 MSRP, and older Aheadset models will be discontinued in lieu of the new product line. Service and warranty parts for discontinued models, including bearings, crown races and other small parts will be available for some time.
