The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that Giant is recalling 2013 XtC Advanced Sl 29er 0 and 1 models as well as Contact SLR 27.2mm carbon fiber seatposts.   There have been five reports of the seatposts breaking, although no injuries have been reported.  This specific recall has not yet been posted on Giant’s site, but when it is, recall notices can be found here.  Contact your local dealer for a replacement.  Giant can also be reached at (866) 458-2555 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.

Some manufacturers purposely put 27.2 mm posts on carbon race bikes to provide a bit more flex and comfort. The XTC Advanced is their pure XC race bike, and it’s assumed there will be no dropper post.

I own one of these and it’s a great bike. The post flexes like a mutha, though….I could see it being a breaking point.

I have a friend who has that bike and a carbon fiber seatpost will not stay locked in place on that frame No matter what he does. I have one as well and I love it but it took six weeks to get a warranty replacement.
