Cateye Stealth EVO+ GPS and ANT+ cycling computer

Cateye has updated two of their more recent cycling computers to add functionality and connectivity. The Padrone Smart gets Bluetooth to link to your smart phone for automatic uploads, and the Stealth EVO+ becomes the top model with input from the Jelly Belly pro cycling team.

The upgraded and new features of the Stealth EVO+ include average & max heart rate, power and cadence; manual start/stop button; GPS-based current altitude; and a programmable display. It also adds Power Balance, which is the ability to display individual left and right leg power measurements if you have a crank based power meter with individual sensors. Rotor and Pioneer come to mind.

It keeps all the other ANT+ compatibility, GPS tracking and other features, too. The best part? It also keeps the $150 MSRP as the Stealth 50, adding all these features with no price increase.

Cateye Padrone Smart bluetooth cycling computer with oversized display for riders with poor vision

The Padrone was introduced at Interbike 2013 as a large format computer for those wanting or needing an oversized display to make the numbers easier to read. Now, those needing glasses or contacts have an improved option that pairs with the Cateye Cycling App on iOS and Android phones.

The computer will also pair with Bluetooth speed, cadence and heart rate sensors on the bike, allowing it to capture basic ride data without a smart phone in tow. Add the phone, and you gain GPS data for the ride, and call/text alerts can be shown on the Padrone’s screen in real time. Like the Stealth EVO+, it’ll also let you upload the ride data immediately to Cateye’s system, Strava or TrainingPeaks.

Their Volt headlight lines get new 100 and 700 lumen models. The $35 Volt 100 gets a USB rechargeable battery and three modes (high, low, flash), side visibility, and both handlebar and helmet mounts.

The 700 runs $130 and bumps the light output and uses the cartridge battery system of the 350 and 50, letting you carry a spare while still having USB recharging. It has five modes, including a hyper burst mode that pushes output to 800 lumens to really get folks attention in otherwise distracting urban areas.

I wish my Garmin would record simultaneous GPS + sensor speed data… :-/

I’m still waiting for something that’s like an edge 500 but with a better screen, and the stealth 50’s backlight. And glosnas too. Instead all I’m seeing is iPhones on handlebars.

I love my Padrone. Great computer. Even better with barfly center mount. This is a great update.

I also want to know where I can get that light mount on the fork. This is great.

@cracked-frame

Looks like it’s a rigged combination of mounts – a Euro-style dynamo light mount (the stainless wire bolted to the fork crown), and a CatEye-to-GoPro-mount adapter with a bolt through.

I hadn’t noticed until seeing that pic that the GoPro mount tabs slide neatly between the spacing of the tabs on a standard Euro dynamo light mount.

As a prescription glasses user, I’d say that if you’re using your correct prescription glasses, and you still need an extra large computer to be able to read it, then you should do your riding indoors, not in traffic. And if you don’t have the correct glasses, get them, or again ride indoors.

On the other hand, Cateye has a real readability problem with the tall stretched digits they use. With more normal proportions the readability is much better, at the same size. No need to go extra large.

@Ronin
The Lezyne Super GPS might be what you are looking for. It will most probably be available this summer.

@Alexander, well the Lezyne looks interesting, I’m wondering if they can’t get better screen tech, like the paper white screens that come with e-readers. Something that’s readable in sunlight, something that I only have to glance at to see. I bet Samsung could come up with such a screen…but I’ll be looking out for the Super GPS, thanks.

@Ronin: e-ink displays used in Kindles, etc. are only useful for static data. “Painting” screen content is very slow, and any change anywhere on the screen requires the entire display to be redrawn. An e-ink display would never be able to keep up rapidly changing data like speed, cadence, time, etc.

The stealth evo “upgrades” are merely a firmware update packaged as a new product. There is nothing new under the hood and therefore this “upgrade” really should be a free firmware update to give functionality that should have been there in the first place.

I think cateye should stand up and provide a firmware update to stealth 50 owners.

Anybody know what that Cateye to GoPro mount is?
