Pedi-scope_periscope-2

Frustrated by the pain in his neck while riding his beloved bike, Inventor and Brooklynite Mike Lane set to work to find a solution that would allow him to safely continue to ride while looking down rather than straight ahead at all times. With your help the Pedi-Scope, “the periscope for your bicycle,” can take flight through Kickstarter. Look out…

Citing both short term back and neck pain and long term complications from bike riding such as Shermer’s Neck, an ailment that causes failure of the neck muscles in long distance cyclists due to fatigue, Lane explains that there are occasions when it is more comfortable or physically favorable to ride while looking down.

Pedi-scope_periscope-1

The periscope is designed to mount to the handlebars, straddling the user’s stem, in order that the rider may peer straight downwards instead of having to look ahead, giving the rider’s neck a break while allowing them to continue to ride safely. Inspired by a set of glasses that allow an individual to read a book on their lap while looking straight ahead, Lane utilized a prism to facilitate the periscope effect.

Pedi-scope_periscope-4

Lane has worked with Industrial designers to refine his final vision of the product, produced and functionally tested resulting prototypes on the road, and has found an overseas source for lightweight, durable prism’s with which to execute it. He is looking for help through Kickstarter to pay for tooling for the final product which he intends to fabricate utilizing a single injection-molded body around the larger, improved prism.

Pedi-scope_periscope-5

If you act quickly, $39 will allow you to reserve a Pedi-Scope of your very own from the first production batch.

Or you could just get your bike set up correctly. Probably the better option…

On top of an idea that limits your awareness on a bike, did you really have to give it a name that sounds like something creepy old men would use to spy on children at the park?

Oh dear, oh dear what has this man done, if was inspired by the reading glasses why not just have a similar set up with cycling glasses instead of strapping a fish tank to the front of his bike.

Man you guys are d*cks, if one of the fancy companies would have come out with a similar device and talked all about how aero it would be to keep your head down while keeping a safe lookout for maximum performance you would be all in and pay a bunch of cash. . . But this guy just wants to offer a practical product that isn’t out there ane it is the typical snobbish bike crowd response. . . The sad thing is. . . Why are bikers such snobs? Only a handful are good enough to make any money or brag about it. The rest of the road bike crowd just complain, make fun of people, and generally don’t wave hi to other people.

Mountain bikers and touring bikers are way more friendly.

I would never use this for city riding, that’s just asking to get hurt. I could see how this might be useful for touring rides on the open road or trails.

Sorry Will, but no. This product is not going to work like you think it will. You cannot have the same field of vision that you would if you bike was properly fit and you could keep your head up. That is why this fails. Its just not safe.

I have two prototypes of this exact product made by Peter Fraiman formerly of Vision. They were designed for TT riders and it mounted on the stem. Instead of a prism, it used two mirrors.

I’ll just leave this here:

By the way, back in the 90’s there was a mirror that attached under your toptube that did exactly this. Dangerous as hell. Try driving around backward in your car only using the rearview mirror.

As the others have said: This is dangerous, as it would greatly limit your field of view. Just set your bike up properly and you will not get neck pain. And if some idiots think it will allow them to be more aero, it would not be allowed in any competition anyway.

This was done in the late 80’s (or early 90’s, I forget). It died then, and I can be sure it’ll die now. Those who don’t study history and all…

There was something like this with mirrors 20 or so years ago… Bad idea then, bad idea now. May actually be more dangerous than a knucklehead staring into their phone while riding.

Now, how about a Potiscope to spot the potholes you won’t see in the Pediscope? Oh, wait… I already see a few potholes in the Pediscope. Hey-O! See what I did there?

I have ridden long distances on my bike–multiple consecutive centuries. Because my bikes have always been properly set up, I have no problem with “neck pain.” I would never use anything that focused my attention in such a narrow way; a rider’s survival on the road depends on situational awareness–knowing what is happening all around, not just what is dead ahead. I think this is dangerous.

I don’t think the people who are posting negative opinions of this idea are just being nay-sayers. I think they have a good point–and I agree with them.

@Will, please take a few deep breaths and stop waving your prejudices. This is being torn up on its merits, or lack of merits and not its brand name.
I don’t care if Tullio Campagnolo himself came down from the heavens to bequeath it to us, riding along head down staring at a tiny window of vision is a good way to get killed because you are sacrificing your peripheral vision and situational awareness on the altar of bad bike fit. If holding your head up hurts just flip up your stem and raise your handlebars.
Besides, the demo bike is a hipster fixie with bullhorns so you know it’s being ridden from the bar tops most of the time anyway.

This is just another reason to ride a recumbent. No butt, back, neck or wrist pain, plus you get to easily and comfortably see the world around/in front of you. Riding in pain equates to less riding then possibly to no riding at all.

Something to the effect of this was put on the market ~20 years ago. IIRC it was reviewed in Bicycling and called the “Wind Cheetah??” Though I might not recall correctly since a search for that term brings up a recumbent trike. OTOH, it’s from long enough ago that I wouldn’t expect there to be a record on teh internets about it.

Forgot to add: it was 2 mirrors, not a prism.

And +1 for Padrote,this sh*t is for Skymall ( Skymall !! )

Nothing new. One of the RAAM rider many decades ago rode with a mirror or periscope.

Aerodynamically, riding heads down is slower because helmet design is optimized for heads up riding.

Come on, give the guy credit for pursuing something he believes in and that he has actually taken it from an idea into a fully functional prototype that he is already promoting and raising capital for. I bet this is far more than what most of you critics have ever achieved in doing.
Sure, I have my concerns regarding the safety, practicalities and overall disadvantages of the product; but I’ll give the guy credit for coming this far, irrelevant if his future with the product launch will be in Skymall or no-Skymall.

This someone outside the enthusiast part of the industry, who know neck pain is due to poor bike fit, coming up with a fix to an issue that could be solved with a little knowledge. His LBS must suck or hes never been there.

You could also do this, and with a wider field of view but les aero (can’t believe I just said that talking about this product…aero…lol…sure he doesn’t give a shiz) with a GoPro et all and a phone.

I like him in the video though. I would buy stuff from him. Just not this.

+1 on dangerous.

This guy’s going after the wrong market.
With a slight modification, this thing will let you watch TV while lying flat on your back.
Sell it as a couch potato’s dream glass. There’s a much larger demand than cycling crowd.
Umm… wait, this too has been done before. Never mind.
