Citing both short term back and neck pain and long term complications from bike riding such as Shermer’s Neck, an ailment that causes failure of the neck muscles in long distance cyclists due to fatigue, Lane explains that there are occasions when it is more comfortable or physically favorable to ride while looking down.
The periscope is designed to mount to the handlebars, straddling the user’s stem, in order that the rider may peer straight downwards instead of having to look ahead, giving the rider’s neck a break while allowing them to continue to ride safely. Inspired by a set of glasses that allow an individual to read a book on their lap while looking straight ahead, Lane utilized a prism to facilitate the periscope effect.
Lane has worked with Industrial designers to refine his final vision of the product, produced and functionally tested resulting prototypes on the road, and has found an overseas source for lightweight, durable prism’s with which to execute it. He is looking for help through Kickstarter to pay for tooling for the final product which he intends to fabricate utilizing a single injection-molded body around the larger, improved prism.
