Google the phrase ‘Bad Hombre’ and you won’t find much in the way of bicycles. Fortunately, this Bad Hombre is more about red-orange rocks than someone with unnaturally orange skin. Based our of Moab, UT for the past six years, Blaze Cycles has a nine year history when it comes to bikes built by Pierre Chastain. Built with flowing lines and steel or titanium frames, Blaze had a few different bikes on display, including a steel bike with a wild custom paint job…

Built for Pierre himself who is quite a tall guy, the Bad Hombre is the evolution of Blaze’s ti builds which started about 2-3 years ago. When Pierre started in Venice Beach, most of his bikes were fillet brazed steel. Using a Paragon chainstay yoke, Blaze has been building 27+ and 29+ mountain bikes which are perfect for their home in Moab. While the huge frame makes the 29+ wheels look small, the Bad Hombre is a 29+ build with sliding dropouts.

The Wolf on the other hand is a 27+ mountain bike with fixed thru axle dropouts, also using a chainstay yoke from Paragon Machine Works. Blaze’s titanium frames feature anodized logos in various colors.

As interesting as the titanium bikes were, this steel Wolf that was hand painted by local artist Sallie Hodges was hard to ignore. As a “Multimedia Artist & Visual Journalist” Sallie, or Gingerbicky, works in many mediums and is clearlly pretty talented with a paint brush.

Blaze bikes are offered in stock sizing though they can be built full custom at an upcharge. Prices start at $1500 for a steel frame, $2600 for the titanium, and average complete builds range from $3500-$5500.

Beautiful work, specifically the painted Wolf.

Speaking of Blaze, thank you for providing some reasonable coverage of this talented builder’s work. He was previously mentioned in a builder interview Anna Schwinn completely punted on.
