The bike travel case specialists at Scicon are regularly asked how best to pack your bike to travel with it. So they wanted to answer the question once & for all, in a reasoned, logical fashion. Hint, hint… not everyone needs to buy a $1000/950€ hard case, but it might make sense for some people & some expensive bikes.

Sure, the Italians at Scicon are travel case makers, so they are going to have a more than slightly biased point of view. But they’ve done a pretty good job of breaking down the topic into five core objective concerns and a mostly neutral point of view. So they put together this pair of infographics. Click on them to jump to Scicon’s site to see what are the highs & lows of each option.

It is still a simplified approach, but Scicon looks at how the lowly cardboard box, a soft bike bag, and the hard travel case each addresses: level of protection, portability & weight, ease of packing, durability, and cost. If you are traveling once or twice with a bike that costs less than a couple grand, it’s probably worth your time to spend a bit more effort with that box. But if you are regularly packing up the race bike to fly to Kona or a race series across the Atlantic, it might be time to look for something more efficient.

This is all well and good but nothing will replace the cardboard box; fedex to a local bike shop in destination area and a crap ton of insurance.

To me the soft shell bags are too risky. Amtrak and a cardboard box gets people most places. Bike flights and a hard shell case fills most of the gaps
