45NRTH Hüsker Dü adds some girth with new 4.8″ fat bike tire

Some tires are trending smaller. Others? Well, in some cases bigger is still better. If you and your fat bike needs fall into that category, but you’re looking for something a little less aggressive than their Flowbeist/Dunderbeist combo, 45NRTH has a new option.

Starting with the redesign of their popular Hüsker Dü tire in 2017 which increased the size of the side lugs for better cornering, the newest version is simply bigger. Measuring 26 x 4.8″, the tire is billed as their fastest maximum flotation fat bike tire. Available in a 60 or a 120 tpi casing, 45NRTH lists the larger Hüsker Dü as compatible with 65-102mm wide rims. Pricing is set at $110 for the 60tpi tire and $130 for the 120tpi version, and both will be available soon.

For when you want to ride your fat bike… and 4″ tires just won’t do

Have you ever ridden a fat bike on non-packed snow? The difference between a 4″ and near-5″ tire is real and can make an impassible trail ride-able. It’s not like you can float over powder or anything, but I’ve been surprised in the past when I’ve been in situations where my bike is rolling over the snow just fine, but if I have to put a foot down for any reason, I post hole. I.e. significantly more surface area on my tires than my shoes. I’ve also been on rides where people with 4″ tires struggle compared to people on 4.8″ tires and it’s not simply a coincidental skill-level difference.

4.8 inches eliminates the need for rear suspension. Haven’t touched any of my other bikes in almost 2 years.

So it’s labeled 4.8″ wide. But is it really 4.4″ or 4.5″ like the others?
