If you plan on getting into deep snow this winter, consider looking into extra leg protection. The Armadillo LT gaiters from Hillsound offer a lightweight barrier to cold and wet conditions. Plus, they’re designed with hiking and snowshoeing in mind, but can also be used while fat biking!

Armadillo LT Gaiters Build:

The Gaiter’s split shell gets a 1000 Denier nylon lower cuff and a slightly stretchy and waterproof upper. Both resist and repel water, dirt and grime. A toe hook, adjustable upper-strap and a belt under the foot prevent the gaiters from shifting. It’s finished with a waterproof YKK zipper that runs from the toe box hook up to the top of the shin. They also meet a waterproof rating of 20,000mm and have a 6RET breathability rating. Plus they’re the lightest gaiters Hillsound offers weighing in at 315g for a size large.

First Impressions:

My first impression of the $50 gaiters focused on how resilient they felt in hand. The lower half is sturdy enough to hold its own shape and the upper reminds me of a fabric found in rain jackets, tough and a bit stretchy. They’re simple to install after adjusting the heel belt and I didn’t have any issues with them shifting while on trails. Sadly I can’t say much about how waterproof they are since snow has avoided our region in the Midwest. But they do keep my pants dry from the little snow and slush we have gotten. They also lack reflective properties which is OK for trails but isn’t ideal if used around traffic. We’re looking forward to testing them throughout the winter and will update down the road.

I’ve been following outdoor clothing closely for 10 years and have never heard of a “6RET breathability rating”.

Hillsound does make good crampons.

Black Diamond FrontPoint gaiters have a good reputation.

If you are going to be using your equipment a lot, Outdoor Research is very good about warranties.

RET is the measurement used in the Holstein test for breathability – it uses a hot metal plate to heat water to simulate perspiration. The lower the number, the more breathable; 6 -12 is the second best bracket.

The ski pole in the foreground made me think I was looking at a poorly applied traction splint.
