BBInfinite spins out ultralight BSA30 bottom bracket for threaded shells

If you have a 30mm spindle road or mountain bike crankset (or power meter) and a frame with a threaded bottom bracket, BBInfinite has the BB for you. Their new BSA30 Ultra-lite claims to be the world’s lightest bottom bracket solution for the BSA+30mm spindle pairing, and doesn’t even require a specialized tool for install.

Weighing just 64g for the pair of cups and bearings, BBInfinite’s BSA30 Ultra-lite bottom bracket comes standard with ABEC-7 stainless ball bearings for $105. Or for even smoother spinning cranks, you can upgrade to Ceramitech ceramic balls for $155 for the pair of cups.

The BSA30 cups are the same outer diameter as a typical Shimano external BB and share the same 16 outer notch design, so you can use the same wrench you already have in the toolbox. Their low-profile form also means the BB offers maximum clearance between cups and the backside of your cranks, making them especially useful to clear power meter back plates and electronics.

The 6061 T6 alloy BB cups are said to work with most “long-pattern” 30mm spindle cranksets from SRAM, Rotor & RaceFace, to name a few. They are recommended for both 68mm BBs for road cranks and 73mm BBs for mountain cranks.

BBInfinite’s aluminum threaded bottom bracket cups are manufactured in the US. The BSA30 bottom bracket is available now for English BSA threaded bottom brackets, with an Italian threaded version coming soon.

This is a BSA bottom bracket for 30mm spindles, right? Seems confusing to call it BSA30, like it’s some new specification for bottom brackets.

Wheels Manufacturing sells a similar bottom bracket, but with angular contact bearings for $74.

VeloKitty, Thanks for the input, but the Wheels one requires a special $22 wrench, making that purchase a $96 investment, and the outer diameter is so large it rubs on the inside of a Quarq power meter back plate, whereas the BBInfinite one is only the size of a classic Shimano cup. The Wheels one is 40 grams heavier as well. Angular contact bearings only work with Rotor cranks or Shimano and that’s IF your bottom bracket threads align the bb “halves” properly along their axial center line, which they rarely do. You can’t use any crank that has a wave washer with an angular contact bearings set ups either because the preload is continuously variable in a system that requires fixed preload to locate the angular races properly in relation to one another.

That’s mildly interesting, but not so much to people who already have several BSA30 BBs. The Rotor BSA30 I used for MTB came with a spanner, which proved useful for VumaQuad BB too. And the Zipp BB weights only 8g more. A good option if I’d need another BSA30, I guess.

30 seems just a tad too big. I think 28.99 would work better.

The 35$ J&L BB is really poor quality, I couldn’t make my cranks spin freely with it and the width seems different to Zipp.

I need help.
What BSA30 should I get in order to reduce the wideness of my crankset ??
normally BSA30 cups are think enough ( 1 cm ) leaving the chainring line too far out , then is a problem to index the front mech .

Is there any BSA 30 out there that has thinner cups ( less than 8 mm ) that could do the work for me ??

last thing I am trying to do is to have to change the whole crankset :/
