Most riders probably wouldn’t ride 85mm aero wheels on a daily basis, but you could. Or at least, that’s what Easton seems to be implying with the launch of their new EC90 Aero 85 Disc wheels. Thanks to the addition of a disc brake Vault hubset, Easton says the wheels are ready for any weather, or any conditions, meaning you shouldn’t be scared of running your aero wheels just because the weather is looking questionable.

Created using their Aero55 Fantom rim profile, the shape has been stretched to 85mm deepto provide more aero advantage. That profile is also 19mm wide internally with a tubeless ready design that will allow the use of wider tubed or tubeless tires.

The addition of the Vault road hubset adds 6 degree engagement for instant accelerations, and the ability to run QR, 12mm or 15mm thru-axles with tool-free endcaps up front, and QR or 12x142mm in the rear. The wheels are built with 24 straight pull Sapim CX-Ray spokes front and rear in a 2x pattern with external alloy nipples. Centerlock disc brake mounts finish things off.

The set is said to weigh 1827g and each wheel is finished using graphics that are created from removing sections of the clear coat for even further weight savings. Pricing is set at $1099 for the front wheel, $1199 for the rear, and $2299 for the set. Available starting the second week of April.

I applaud the use of 24 spokes with 2x lacing – stiffer and more reliable wheels. But 85mm on a daily basis? Are we chasing Strava segments every time we get on a bike now?

Bravo to Easton for finally making this wheelset in a real depth for real people. Shallow wheels are alright for tiny climbers but these tick all the boxes for the daily grind. Perfect commuting wheels, they will pay for themselves within the first year in increased efficiency.

My Aeroad disc came with 62mm deep wheels. I just threw some 32mm tubless tires on them and have been riding them the last 2 months through the cold and snowmelt. With disc brakes, why would I ever need to change wheels because of the weather?

That being said, 85mm is just crazy in any weather.

I had 88mm carbon clincher wheels in 2011. They were polarizing in the peloton, roughly 2kg for the set (w/powertap hub), and they were feckin FAST.
At 170lbs, I didn’t get pushed around by the wind too badly. The rims were repurposed for track use and they continue to work well. I’ve won more races on this wheelset than any other in my arsenal. They just go fast.

You better be able to back the look if you roll on a rim depth over 50mm…as in you better be fast regardless of the wheel you are on.

Why? Are looks supposed to count for something? Are we supposed to judge other riders on their “looks” vs speed? I guess I’ve been doing it all wrong, what with me not judging other riders as such.
