2020 has not been kind to cycling events, and the COVID-19 related hits keep coming. Now it’s been announced that all of the Leadville-based mountain bike and run events have been cancelled. That announcement came shortly after SBT GRVL announced their decision to cancel, as well as the 2020 version of the Breck Epic – though they’re encouraging you to “Epic in Place” until the 2021 edition.
Obviously, the cancellation of any of these events is not an easy decision to make. Race promoters spend the entire year preparing for events like the Leadville Trail 100, and the decision to cancel is not only a big economic impact to the promoters, but the town as well. For those who have already registered for the event, the Leadville Race series is offering three options:
- Option 1: Donate your entry fee to your choice of the Life Time Foundation, Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation or NICA (national or state league of your choice). As a thank you, we will provide you with guaranteed, non-complimentary entry into your choice of the 2021, 2022 or 2023 LT100 MTB. We will be in touch to get your selection.
- Option 2: Complimentary deferral option valid for 1-time use in your selection of the 2021, 2022 or 2023 LT100 MTB
- Option 3: Full refund on entry fee (excluding the service fees)
For complete information, check out the Leadville Race Series Cancellations FAQ page.
Another big cancellation in the MTB world is the 2020 Breck Epic. While the race itself has been cancelled for 2020 and the registered riders have been offered refunds, they are hosting the ‘Epic in Place’ challenge to help you stay fit. The challenge is to ride 500 miles and 80,000′ of vertical over the course of the summer. Those who sign up will win a t-shirt, and maybe some swag. For all the details and rules, check out the Breck Epic in Place page.
It’s a similar story for the SBT GRVL 2020 event. The decision has been made to cancel the actual race, though they have also announced some sort of virtual component. The SBT VRTL will apparently take place on August 16th, 2020, though the details have yet to be released. Info about refunds or deferrals can be found here.
