SCOTT has released an all-new mountain bike helmet that won’t break the bank. Retailing at £74.99, the SCOTT Argo Plus is a relatively affordable trail helmet with an open-face design, featuring the appropriate extended rear coverage you’d expect for off-road riding, plus a MIPS liner for dealing with rotational impacts. And, it looks pretty neat. All the details here, but first, Scotty Laughland’s take…

SCOTT Argo Plus Trail Helmet

The SCOTT Argo Plus slots into their lineup of mountain bike helmets between the Vivo and Stego Plus models. With a price to match the Vivo, the Argo Plus certainly offers quite a lot more bang for your buck, with the addition of MIPS technology, a bigger visor, storage space on the rear for sunglasses, and a more mountain appropriate aesthetic. If the choice were between these two only, there would be a clear winner.

The Argo Plus gets an in-mold polycarbonate outer that doesn’t quite extend over the entire EPS shell; it covers the rear and most of the front but falls short at the sides. The EPS itself and MIPS liner take care of impacts, with the EPS extending rearward. There’s a notable gap at the mid-point of the rear where the dial for the retention system sits; judging by the space available there, it’s unlikely to be ponytail compatible – you’ll have to wear your ponytail very low, underneath the dial.

Venting looks to be well thought-through, with vents on the visor too to help channel airflow through the vents on the main body of the helmet, helping to keep the rider cool on warmer days.

An adjustable cam divider means you can optimise the strap lengths to suit the shape of your head.

In comparison to the vastly more expensive Scott Stego Plus, which retails at £149.99, the Argo Plus lacks an adjustable visor, so you can’t stow goggles underneath when you finish a trail. The visor also lacks the integrated GoPro mount, a highlight feature of the Stego Plus (reviewed here) if you’re into that sort of thing. The other difference is the buckle; the Stego Plus gets a fancy magnetic FIDLOCK one, whereas the budget-friendly Argo Plus gets a regular plastic one.

The Argo Plus gets the same HALO fit system as the Stego Plus, adjustable in height as well as diameter, so you can position the cradle at the right height for the shape of the occipital region of your skull. We don’t have a photo to share with you, but apparently the comfort liner inside the helmet is pre-cut to allow you to customize it for optimal comfort.
