Canyon marks the new e-road Endurace:ON AL as a big step for their rapidly expanding e-bike range. Their first road bike to get pedal assist, Canyon calls it a tool to “democratize performance”, with the aim of leveling the playing field for cyclists of all fitness levels to enjoy road riding together. But it’s also about removing a big barrier to entry, the idea that many potential road & all-road cyclists have that road riding is only for light, fast, powerful, and super fit cyclists.

The goal of Canyon’s new Endurace:ON AL e-bike is just to get more people out on bikes. That’s pretty much the idea behind most e-bikes. But even though the Canyon Endurace is already a high-performance road bike with a level of comfort that pretty much any cyclists can enjoy, giving it a bit of pedal-assist just opens up more possibilities.

Endurace:ON AL… powered by Fazua Evation Black Pepper

The heart of what makes this new e-bike tick is the latest evolution of German powertrain maker Fazua’s compact Evation gearbox, motor & battery – weighing just 4.6kg. Already arguably the smoothest pedal-assist on the market these days, this Canyon is also the first to get Fazua’s latest Black Pepper performance update. It still features the full 250W max power & 60 Nm of torque pedal-assist. But inside the compact drivepack, a completely new retune promises improved responsiveness, with even smoother transition on and off of power assist.

We talked with Fazua a few months back, and they mentioned that even though their system feels really smooth tapering on & off, this new generation would be better optimized for wide cadence ranges that you see road riding. Now, Black Pepper is said to offer gentle, smooth support from 50 to 120 rpm. “Simply put: with its new factory tune, the Evation is the most complete e-road drive system available today.

Assist still is limited to 25km/h, but where Fazua really shines is the virtually resistance-free feeling once you get above that speed. So it really does then just feel like you are pedaling a heavier bike, not that you are fighting against the motor like on most e-bikes.

The new east Breeze mode is rated for a max of about 90km of pedal assist depending on rider weight & terrain. The 250Wh battery then takes approximately 3.5hrs to fully recharge.

Endurace:ON AL – Tech details

The Endurace:ON AL started off with the same all-day comfort Sport Geometry of the regular Endurace, with identical head & seat angles and stack & reach figures. But it then gets tweaked to fit Fazua Evation drive system and still keep the big tire clearance that makes the family of bikes so versatile. So the Endurace:ON adds 1cm to the now 425mm long chainstays for added stability and room for up to 700x35mm tires.

Beyond geo tweaks, Canyon also outfits the e-bike with sturdy but light e-road-ready components. The aluminum e-bike road frame gets a full carbon fork & a carbon seatpost, but more reasonable alloy stem & bar. Large volume 32mm Schwalbe E-One tires offer plenty of durable grip, while still letting you run comfortable pressures even though they don’t appear to be tubeless ready. Then Canyon also says they picked GRX for its improved braking power & ergonomics, plus a easy to manage wide 11-42 cassette range.

For the time being the new e-road bike will only be offered in a single complete bike build in four frame sizes, and has been debuted today to global markets, with the exception of the US which doesn’t appear to be getting the newest e-bike right away. Weighing in at a claimed 15.2kg/33.5lb (size M), the 3000€ Canyon Endurace:ON AL 7.0 all-road e-bike gets an interesting bikes spec, kitted out with a Shimano GRX gravel 1x 11-speed groupset and alloy wheels & cockpit. The e-road bike is officially available from today direct from Canyon, but is likely only available now in small or large sizes – M & XL are expected from 1-3 weeks from now.

Definitely watch Hambini’s video on Canyon before you consider purchasing one.

The stack and reach on the Small aren’t very small — the reach is roughly the same as a Domane or Synapse 54.
It is nice to see how quickly e-bikes are improving.

I’m doubting that the 24 spoke wheels are going to be tough enough given that it’s designed for all-road / gravel and many clients are likely going to weigh more than your average rider who chooses a bike without electric assist.

When will this be available in the USA and will the assist go up to 28MPH like the Creo and other e road bikes?
