Ever wonder about the racer/mechanic relationship of some of the top cross racers in the world? SRAM Road Diaries provides some insight into that exact partnership with Jeremy Powers and his mechanic Tom Hopper through this new film put together by Sam Smith.

From SRAM Road Diaries:

A unique look at the relationship of professional cyclocross racer Jeremy Powers and mechanic Tom Hopper. Powers is the current US Cyclocross National Champion and the sole rider on Team Rapha-Focus. Hopper is his full-time mechanic responsible for maintaining every aspect of their US and European bike fleet. With thoughtful insight, efficient edits, and distinctive camera work this six-minute video is an interesting lesson about the relationship between the rider and mechanic and the bikes and components they depend on.

Pro racing is so weird in this regard. My absolute favorite part of cycling is being my own mechanic.

The video is very well done, but the content is pretty depressing to me. I think the best part of cycling is being your own mechanic. Bicycles are beautifully simple machines, and even racers should know how they work while riding — not feel like they need to forget.

I thought JP started his own team and that while he still raced on Focus bikes and had kit from Rapha, that the ‘Rapha-Focus’ team of the past few years had ended?

Excellent vid, you don’t get to that level wrenching on your own rig. Awesome to see a combo of pro’s who both excel and compliment each other at their respective expertise.

What a beautiful story. And what’s pro about putting new parts on a new bike? Professional assembler, adjuster and salesman might be a better description. A mechanic is someone who first attempts to repair broken things before replacing them.
