cx national mechanics championship

If you’ve ever worked the pit at a cross race, you know. While the riders might be suffering out on the course, mechanics are in their own sort of pain cave behind the scenes. Between the cold weather, stress of making sure their racer’s bikes are perfect, and the overspray of the pressure washer, CX mechanics are often the unsung heroes of cross.

With the National Championships taking place in Asheville, NC this January, what better chance to start a new competition? Thanks to Glacier Cycling, Sierra Nevada, Niner Bikes, and more, mechanics will have a chance to step up on a podium of their own next month. And what better location to host the competition than a brewery? We have a feeling this will be where you can find us Friday night…

Pretty useless. I don’t see the best shop guys showing up to this… maybe a state championship or tri-state championship should work. This could maybe work at Interbike but otherwise this is nonsense

Yo Veganpotter, this is a party! That’s how we do it in cyclocross. We make up “nonsense” excuses to get together and celebrate cycling in all it’s winter glory. Don’t be offended that it’s not sanctioned.

Why does a good CX mech need to know how to change tubes quickly?

Lighten up folks, it’s good fun!

The beauty of this is that much like actual mechanical problems, planning ahead of time wins this contest.

1 – choose a tire/wheel combination that fits easily. Shimano rims + michelin cx clinchers can be removed without levers faster than most people can lever off other brands.
2 – Assuming it’s not provided, use a cheap cassette with the top 4 cogs pinned, and make sure it’s not stuck before beginning.
3 – prestretch the tubular for a day before hand.

CX Hotdog, i don’t care that its not sanctioned. It would be great for a real contest like this. However, just call it a bike mechanic competition instead of a National Championship. Why? Because 80% of the competitors will come from within 200 miles, at best

Better yet… hold this event in conjunction with CX Nats

Man, if I were to make the trip out to Asheville for Nats I would heckle the SH*T out of this…

Some of ya’ll are so in the dark it is embarrassing that this was even announced on this website. Bike nerds from the internet aren’t competing. It for the mechanics who hustle on the pro circuit all season long.

BTW, I’m cheering for Daimo.

Colin, it’s definitely a cool idea but the best mechanics won’t even be here. Sure, the top 3-5 people will, but most of the people racing don’t have the best mechanics. They have competent friends doing it on the cheap, free or they have family simply cleaning their bikes… that’s the reality of cross in the US when even the pro riders aren’t really getting paid a penny. Road Nats would probably have more depth in terms of mechanics that would be even better at working a cross pit than all but the best cross mechanics (they’re probably working for road or mountain teams in the summer anyway)

Veganpotter: you should read before judging the event. CX Nationals are being held in Ashville from Jan 5th to the 10th. The mechanic competition is for PRO CX mechanics, not shop mechanics. Therefore the mechanics that this event is meant for will be at said event.

It is so over Veganpotter’s head that it is a FUN contest among the mechanics for the CX elite teams. You spend too much time here. Go have a beer, tea, or whatever.

Someday we’ll look back at the Facebook Age as the most embarrassing time of world history.

Let’s just say the emblem and ad are misleading…
It’s pretty safe to say that there aren’t 20 great mechanics working for the pro field…just as there are barely 20 pro racers in the pro field

Im not saying names, but someone needs more whiskey. Any drinking events in conjunction? Beer Pong? Funneling? Shoot the boot?

@VeganPotter, Judging from the last two UCI races I attended (Derby Cup and Jingle Cross) I assure you nationals will have plenty of great pro mechanics there between the women and men’s elite fields.

Hey uuuhhh, easy enough wrenchin’ in your warm little shop there VP… try some hands frozen, mud covered, outside variety sometime, I’ve seen some incredibly talented wrenches in the pits throughout the country, throughout this year… and every year… I’d say they are some of the best indeed… so let ’em have some fun, and let us know when you’ve got the ‘real’ wrenchin’ championships all organized for us… I’m gonna go glue up a tubi
