A ton of competition in the action camera market recently leads one to think, “how will GoPro continue to compete?” GoPro has always held their own at the high end of the market, but with their new Hero, they’ll be giving the entry level buyers something to get excited about as well.

Simply called the Hero, the little camera seems pretty impressive for the $199 price tag. In terms of the body, you’re getting the same waterproof to 33ft housing with an LCD touch screen display on the rear as the Hero5 and Hero6. That includes the ability to use voice control to control the camera (only the Hero6 will wake on voice though). You’ll also get built in image stabilization, access to GoPro Quikstories, and a WiFi or Bluetooth connection to connect to the GoPro app.

Where things start dropping off from the higher end models is in the quality of filming and controls. The Hero does not have 4k capabilities, GPS, Exposure control, Protune, and only shoots in 10MP and 10fps bursts for photos.

However, you’re still getting a lot for your money at $199, and the average GoPro user will probably benefit more from the voice control and LCD screen than the missing features. Sold with the accessories shown above, the cameras are available now.

Features:

  • Award-Winning Image Quality: HD Video (1440p60 and 1080p60) and 10MP photo performance
  • 2-Inch Touch Display: Using HERO is as easy as using your phone thanks to its touch display
  • Voice Control: Tell HERO to start and stop recording, take a photo, turn off and more
  • Waterproof + Extremely Durable: Waterproof up to 30’ (10M) and designed go everywhere your smartphone can’t
  • Video Stabilization: HERO features video stabilization that helps smooth out the shakes
  • Smartphone Compatible: HERO offloads your photos and videos to the GoPro app which creates fun, shareable videos for you, automatically
  • Body and Gear Mountable: compatible with 30+ GoPro mounting accessories

They should have come out with this years ago. The average consumer doesn’t need 8K video and Protune for $500+

Still wish they’d incorporate more features for those of us who use these as safety devices. E.g. rolling loop, 3’lines, etc. I bought my GoPro hero for $109 a couple of years ago and it’s one of the best Race Analysis tools ever albeit 100% of the videos of me not crashing are very boring.
