2011 hermes sport excellence carbon fiber bicycle wheelset with tune hubs

Following their ridiculously light (970g!!!) Levitator wheelset, Hermes Sport has developed a 50mm aero tubular wheelset that only pays a 100g penalty for the added profile depth.

Built using the Toray T1000 carbon fiber, the rims are then built up in the U.S. at Hermes Sport’s factory in southern California. They’re put together using Sapim CX-Ray spokes and Tune’s Mig 70 and Mag 180 hubs. Sure, there’s a rider weight limit of 200lbs, but that should cover most avid cyclists and racers that would be in the market for an $1,850 wheelset.

As an added bonus, the rims have a “ceramic ablative” coating to help reduce heat at the braking surface and, one would think/hope, add a little brake pad grip. Available now through authorized dealers.

Full press release after the break…

In celebration of their first full year of business, Hermes Sport moves further into the high-end racing wheel market with the release of the Excellence wheelset. This marks a bold move for the young company, which boasted a considerable expansion of their sales and dealer base over the past year.

At 1070g, this new 50mm deep-profile aerodynamic wheelset features an exceptionally low weight, and the quality of product is assured in part due to their close working relationship with Tune, the component maker from Buggingen, Germany. Through the use of that firm’s fine hubs and considerable expertise, the Excellence promises to be first in a line of new, higher-end wheelsets implementing a certain degree of Teutonic flair.

“While in the past we focused on strict price-point requirements,” says founder and CEO Alex Webster, ”we now, after a year of hard work, have taken the irresistible opportunity with the Excellence to have a bit of fun with something a bit fancier.” He went on to say that he has been very impressed with the new wheels’ performance and rigidity. With a retail price of $1850, the Excellence is the new flagship model of the Hermes Sport line and is intended for the enthusiast road and triathlon markets.

With recent expansion in Northern California, the Rockies, and the East coast, Hermes Sport remains committed to the dealer-sales model and is ready to take orders for this exciting new product

Their website doesn’t specifically say whether they make their rims or buy them from somebody. Their warranty also seems a bit weak. Aside from that, what’s the big deal? There’s no magic in lacing together wheel components, especially if you’re just buying rims from someone else. It’s a bit odd that their website really doesn’t say much about what goes into their wheels at all.

I can buy the same rims on EBAY, Tune hubs and the spokes from a local shop, pay to have them built………for less than $1000. What is the benefit of buying the HERMES wheels??
