enduro bearings threaded pressfit bottom brackets

Enduro is finalizing their new PF30 and PF86/92 threaded bottom brackets, looking to solve two of the biggest problems with pressfit setups.

They’re still pressed into the frame, but the alloy shell is stiffer and once pressed in, you thread it together lightly to cinch it tight. That eliminates any play, which causes those annoying creaks and groans, and ensures proper alignment, which extends bearing life and reduces drag.

The smaller one uses a standard Shimano BB tool. The bigger one uses their own tool, which also has teh Shimano size on the other end. They’re not sure yet of the tool will be included, but they’ll try to make it cheap if not. They’re also considering making it work with the Rotor BB tool, but not sure if the thinner wall on their BB will work properly with only 12 indents.

Should be available end of September with pricing similar to their other bottom brackets.

Shown in gold is their new Cannondale HollowGram crankset removal tool that combines the usual two parts into a single tool.

The other parts are a new adapter for Rotor Rex BBs that need a half pin to fit. Note the pins on the adapter are cut in half compared to the round pins on the base piece.

One of the more clever solutions we saw are these new Enduro Custom bits, which converts BB86/92 into BB30 by pressing bearings directly into the frame with no shell. Each side uses double row bearings in either stainless steel or ceramic.

I think you mean BB30 into BB86/92. No way you could fit a BB30 bearing into a BB92 shell.

Funny; they have to find some way around to fix press fit BB with a thread…
Sooo, when will we come back to the proven threaded BB design and forget about this Press Fit ignominy?

It is getting a bit ridiculous…

A bearing that allows 30mm spindle in a BB86/92 shell would make it compatible with BB386, not BB30. Interesting idea.

I like the enduro bearing tools. Just did my hubs with cheapo bearings from ebay. There is a crazy markup on branded bearings. The cheapos are hit or miss though, you have to find the right ones.

He actually means you can convert a BB86 into BB386. You can use a 30mm spindle of a 386 on a BB86 frame. BB30 cranks’ spindles are too short still.

@Nik BB386 is still a larger size than BB86 though…shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Nope, the bearings are just smaller on the 4130 bearings in a bb86 frame to fit the larger spindle.

How is the pressfit set up different than a headset?
I mean- I know and think I understand the differences but how is a PF BB creaky and my (still) 1 1/8th headube w/ 100mm of travel that get slammed into who knows what and still stays creak free? ‘Whenever I find a creak up front it’s not the cup/headtube junction.
What the crap goes on down there w/ PF BBs?

@Johnny Chicken Bones: Do you do complete bar spins at 90-100 RPM for nearly the entire duration of your ride under heavy load? No? Well, now you know the difference between the stresses that BBs and headsets see.

“Do you do complete bar spins at 90-100 RPM for nearly the entire duration of your ride under heavy load? No? Well, now you know the difference between the stresses that BBs and headsets see.”

That explains absolutely nothing. It doesn’t matter whether the shaft is spinning or not except to the bearing itself.

Johnny,

If an older bikeradar article is to be believed, then it’s variations in frame tolerances that necessitate plastic cups and that whole combinations leads to unhappiness.

Pressfit headset cup tolerances are on the order of 0.05mm to 0.1mm.

Almost all industrial bearings are “pressfit”.

The reason why pressfit BBs creak are
1. Installation error.
2. Poor frame tolerances. Bearings fits need to be very precise for long life. Precision costs money. Bike makers are inherently cheap.

Maybe a stupid question but can I use this also for my Specialized Enduro MTB? The biggest problem I have is the dirt / mud that destroys my bearings…

Looks like a nice take on the current Praxis system. I’ve had one of those going for 15 months without a hitch. Fingers crossed!

Silimer of Rotor 4130 Press-Fit BB Cup, using 6806 bearing to make 1mm less diameter, and outside edge defend overpull.

BBs undergo a far larger amount of lateral force than headsets, which means the dominant force applied to the bearings is in the exact right direction to make them move in their mating surface. Poor tolerances tell the rest of the story. personally, I’m not a fan of the generic pressfit BB trend, but I’d consider a BB that mates to unthreaded surfaces, but has threads of it’s own to keep things from moving to be better even than a threaded BB, provided that it works. keep the threads in the replaceable part, stop having to worry about cross threading the tiny threads used for BSA.

+1 on it being PF86/92 -> BB386. No way it is goign to fit a BB30 crank.

But if somebody has a PF86/92 BB and is planning on using a BB386 EVO crank.
I would recommend FSA’s original problem solver for this.

This BB will be less prone to creaks and water damage.
Just my 2 cents.

Really digging the Cannondale tool!

@Seraph, the BB86-BB30 above is actually BB86 to BB386, Rotor make a similar system. I have a Giant with a pf 86 shell with a rotor crank that has a 30 mm spindle. The outer bearing race is also the cup, allowing for a much larger spindle. It is not a bb30 or pf30 conversion as the crank spindles are too short.
