If you’re worried about protection, there’s fewer reasons than ever to skip out on a full face helmet. Convertible helmets rose in popularity since they allowed you to ride the less dangerous parts of a ride with a helmet that was more ventilated and lighter weight, and then attach the chin bar when things got rowdy. But what if that full face helmet was just lighter and more ventilated to begin with? That question has given rise to an all new chapter in the full face helmet.
While the convertible helmet concept is great in certain instances, there are still a number of compromises that have to be made in order to make it strong with and without the chin bar. For helmets like the new iXS Trigger FF, they are able to use a completely inmolded shell for the entire helmet. The process allows for massive vents to be molded into the shape, but also cuts down on weight – which is evident with the 600g claimed weight for a Small and 660g claimed weight for a M/L.
To allow the helmet to meet DH certifications for the chinbar impact, the helmet includes an X-Frame reinforcement that is molded into the helmet. Note that the helmet is not equipped with something like MIPS, which is probably what allows it to squeeze in under the weight of other ultra light full face helmets like the TLD Stage.
Equipped with a three position adjustable visor that offers the perfect place to stash your goggles, there’s also a gripper at the back of the helmet to hold the straps. Fit adjustment is offered through their Ergofit Ultra dial fit system with three vertical positions, and the helmet snaps into place with a Fidlock magnetic buckle.
Offered in five colors, the helmet has a retail price of $249 and is EN1078, CPSC, ASTM certified.
