Kinomap announced several new updates to their video based, interactive indoor training service. Following up to last year’s more passive Strava and Veloviewer collaboration, Kinomap has adding the possibility to run virtual video training on many Strava segments. There are also several functional updates to the app experience and expanded compatibility now available.

Virtual Strava Segment training

What Kinomap has done was to run detailed database matching between their catalog of video and defined segments on Strava. The result is high quality video segments that allow you to virtually train on some of the famous Strava segments on the road. Not only does it give a unique perspective on training for KOM hunting, but it also highlights the most interesting elements of many existing Kinomap videos.

The segments also let users drop out the less effective parts of Kinomap videos for training (like descents) focusing instead on things like jumping from segment to segment as a part of interval training.

Another user benefit is the ability to easily search for a specific segment by name or its Strava ID, or to find them by climb classification so you can compare your self on your smart connected trainer against real performances out on the same road.

Core Interval training

Kinomap also has added a new Core Interval Training feature as a no-nonsense warm-up tool to get your training efforts started. The ‘straight to the point’ interval training has two modes working either with targeted power outputs or fixed resistance levels, and syncs with all of your ride tracking sites.

Virtual video training updates

They’ve also finally added a “Resume A Workout” feature. Since they have several longer Kinomap rides, a few over 6 hours in length, now you can start and stop those longer indoor training rides as your schedule allows.

Other updates beyond just an improved user interface include an improved, more effective map-based search to find a specific ride video; updated ‘in-progress’ and ‘achievement percentage’ stats displayed on any of their videos; new direct user pages for video creators to make it easier to promote the ride videos that they produce; a new ‘Contest Mode’ designed to help shops set up Kinomap with in-store smart trainers as both a demonstration tool and to run in-shop events & competitions; and lastly new support for the crazy/cool new Wahoo KickrClimb trainer & even more connected smart trainers thanks to the newly industry adopted Fitness Machine Bluetooth Smart protocol.

The updates are all part of a new version of the Kinomap App be released to coincide with Interbike this week. Available for iOS & Android devices, they include a number of free rides & segments to try it all out.

This is great, I always preferred watching real footage instead of video gamy graphics. I often watch a Ben Goyette race video on YouTube when I want to go through a long trainer session.
