Kogel cross bearing DK200 contest (2)

It seems like everyone’s moving to 30mm spindles. With many of the smaller crank makers already offering 30mm spindles to fit in a multitude of frames, we’ve even heard rumors of the biggest two considering the larger option. While the 30mm spindles can technically fit in just about every bottom bracket shell, it doesn’t mean that all bottom brackets are created equal.

Ever since 30mm crank spindles started to get more popular, Kogel bearings has fielded requests from customers looking for a better way to cram it into a BB86/BB92 bottom bracket shell. Finding most current options either using extremely thin bearings or eliminating the cup completely, Kogel wanted an option that was more durable. Let’s face it, no one loves a creaky bottom bracket.

For Kogel that meant redesigning the bearing races so that they were small enough to allow for the same size ball bearing as they use in their BB30 bottom bracket. Of equal importance was the ability to fit their Cross seals to make sure those larger bearings stayed clean in a variety of conditions. Thinking that they’ve found the answer to BB86/BB92 to 30mm needs, the new ceramic bottom brackets are now available through their dealers and web store for $189.99 with either Road or Cross seals.

To celebrate, they are giving away a BB86-30 (or any other bottom bracket they make) in celebration of the upcoming DK200…

Amanda “Panda” Nauman is a monster on the bike. After winning the Dirty Kanza 200 in 2015, she is headed back to Kansas this weekend to put some more miles on her Kogel bottom brackets – which Kogel is happy to point out that a single BB lasted Amanda more than 5000 miles, offroad. To bring a little competition to the mix, Kogel is giving away a bottom bracket, but you’ll probably need a crystal ball (or be really lucky) to win. The catch is that you have to predict Amanda’s finishing time for the DK200. Closest to the actual time wins a Kogel bottom bracket, and even installation if you’re close to a Kogel dealer. Head on over to the site listed below to enter, and good luck at DK200 Amanda!

I’ve been using the (double sealed) cross version since September (as tester) … They’re brilliant!

So that means I can rip my Hollowgram cranks off my Super Six and slap them into my TCR?

Do they come with free creaking or is that extra? xD

So nearly 200,- for a BB to fit:
-a certain standard designed from another standard
-to a crankspindle standard that has been modified from a different standard
(PF30->BB86/92 to a 30mm spindle, but then longer)

Gotta love those BB standards…

We did enough diverging with BB’s over the years, let’s get started with converging!

@Durian Rider – unfortunately that is not going to work. Regardless of what adapter is being used, the spindle length of a true BB30 crank like the Cannondale Hollowgram, is not long enough for use on the wider bottom bracket shell of a BB86/BB386 frameset.

The stupid thing is that BB386 are actually really BB30 cranks too. Its the BB30 ONLY cranks that don’t make the cut. You CAN actually get a longer spindle and shim it though. It’ll increase your Q factor but if you’re duck footed, you may get away with it.

I replaced my RaceFace Next SL BB with the ceramic version of one of these Kogels after only getting 500 miles out of the RaceFace BB. I was hoping to double or triple the mileage. Unfortunately the ceramic Kogel it was toast after two normal rides (50ish not even muddy miles). They were awesome to send a replacement quickly but all they had in stock was the “road” version to get me going. The road one lasted twice as long but is now toast (after 5 rough rides, but no water submersion).

Hopefully I’ve been unlucky; I’m waiting on a mtn version replacement. Perhaps it was just a faulty mtn BB, and the road one didn’t last because it’s “road”? My last high end threaded bottom bracket (Chris King) lasted thousands of miles and I was hoping for similar durability from these very expensive parts.

Josh, I’m sorry you had this experience. There is a big difference between our ‘road’ and ‘cross’ seals for off road durability. I can imagine we sent the road version to help you out in a pinch, we will be happy to send you the updated bottom bracket. Please reach out direct or to your dealer.

KB – Your response is very much appreciated. And yes, your company did help me out while in a huge pinch due to the first failure, and I am very grateful for the last minute assistance as I had an out of state race to get to that week. I think you guys overnight-ed the replacement part which was awesome (and expensive for you). I am working with the dealer to queue up the replacement mtn BB. Hopefully you guys get some in stock soon and the new one performs inline with other’s experiences.

I’ve had one of the road BB in my CX bike for hundreds and hundreds and rain over the winter and lots of bike washing not pointing hose at BB of course but I don’t leave bikes muddy after a winter ride and I recently replaced the chain and the cranks spin nice and smooth..

BBinfinite and Wheels MFG make ones too. Less money. Last way longer and won’t creak. Had so many customers with Kogel’s and with in a few hundred miles the bearings went bad and massive amounts of creaking because regular press in cups move in the frame some damaging frames.

Douginarug, we have not seen a massive amount of warranty claims from you. Did you know our pro riders put in 10.000 miles without service and we have the best warranty in the industry?

We’re eager to turn that frown upside down and learn from your experience.
