What do Lightweight bicycle components and Audi’s R18 e-tron quattro LMP1 race car have in common? For starters both employ the use of T1000 carbon fiber. That, and they both include a hefty price tag. First teased back in March, Audi’s Sport Racing bike is gaining a lot of attention lately – mostly due to the price tag. That’s understandable considering the €17,500 ($19,500) sticker, but hey, it’s still $12k cheaper than the Lamborghini Aventador BMC Impec.

Sure, the Audi Sport Racing Bike is expensive, but considering the top tier build on the Lightweight wheels and frame, it’s not that surprising…

Using the Lightweight Urgestalt as a canvas, the Audi road bike starts with a 790g frame (54cm) that is designed to be more fondo than racer. Throw in the Lightweight Meilenstein carbon wheels and you’re already looking at $10,000 retail for the frame, fork, and wheels alone. Obviously, you could pick up a DuraAce Di2 group, custom R8 nappa leather covered Selle Italia Saddle and the rest of the components for less than $9,500, but with that difference you’re paying for one of just 50 bikes with sweet custom Audi paint and a build that tips the scales at 13 lbs (5.8kg).

With each bike individually labeled and numbered with a special plaque on the seat tube, Audi Sport Bikes can be ordered directly from Quattro GmbH, or from any Audi dealer world wide.

Another example of “badge engineering”; take an existing product, add a different name and charge a lot more. I have no doubt they will find 50 people with more money than common sense.

Say what you want about the marketing behind this bike, but that paint job is gorgeous.

As easy as it would be to grumble about this type of project, in the end it means more business for the boutique brand Lightweight in the form of 50 frame and wheelsets, also 50 complete Dura Ace groups sold, which a nice bonus for Paul Lange the German Shimano dist…..I could go on, but my point is, if there are people willng to buy it, then it just means another paycheck for some bike industry folks. And that ain’t bad.

Around the same price as the Specialized McLaren bike (although that one was a special custom production and not just a rebranded stock model)

The mechanic who built this was obvious a cyclocross fan; look at the bulldozer bars/hood position.

“More money than common sense.” Wait, what”?

This “reverse snobbery” must stop. Anyone spending more than a few hundred dollars on a bike is making a completely discretionary purchase. There is no special magic rule that says that $10,000 for a bike is ok, but $20,000 is ridiculous. Or $5,000 is sensible, but $10,000 is a vanity splurge.

You have to just accept that people are buying bicycles because the bike makes them feel good and they can afford it. You buy what you like,a nd let the next person buy what they like without getting all snide about their choices.

No matter which way you slice it, judging people by what they buy for themselves is snobbery, period. If it doesn’t float your boat, ignore it.

I love AUDI AND LIGHTWEIGHT however this project is a joke, you would of thought that something amazingly stunning and impressive would of come from this project. Plenty of $$$$ and capability to start from scratch. WHAT a let down! and a boring.
Rather have a EVO-SUPER-6, OR A SWIFT SCULP.
The so called expert that gave a green light on this project should be fired.
