After months of anticipation, the Louisville Mega Cavern Bike Park is finally open. As of this past Monday the 9th, the world’s first fully underground bike park is now accepting riders. Built nearly 10 stories beneath the surface, the man made cavern sits under 26 feet of solid lime stone. Occupying just a fraction of the massive hole in the ground spanning 4 million square feet, there is currently around 320 thousand square feet for your riding enjoyment.
Maintaining a comfy yearly temp of 58-60º F, at this point there are 45 trails with a few new features added since we stopped by to get a first look. Listed as a soft opening, bike rentals are not yet available but are expected by April 2015. While we were told to expect pricing on par with parks like Ray’s MTB, the Mega Cavern prices end up running about $15 more if you’re planning to ride all day since tickets are split into 4 hour and 8 hour pricing. A 4 hour ride ticket runs $25, and the all day 8 hour pass runs $40 per person. However, there are a number of combo, special, and group deals available depending on your situation. All riders are required to wear a helmet and ride with at least one brake, and parents must stay with their children (meaning they have to pay for admission as well). The park is open Monday through Thursday 10am to 6pm, and Friday through Sunday 10am to 8pm. Reservations are encouraged, but not required.
