Next gen carbon BH G8 Disc evolves into fully integrated aero road bike

BH Bikes just revealed the next generation their top aero road bike – the G8 Disc – and notably missing are any shift or brake lines. Evolving their most successful premium road bike once more, the new carbon G8 Disc hits the current trend of integration & fully internal cable routing, taking advantage of FSA’s ACR headset & cockpit system. But while the overall form of the new bike looks similar, there is more aerodynamic optimization lurking in its update profile.

At first glance, the latest BH G8 Disc looks quite similar to the previous G7 Disc aero road bike that we tested two years ago. In fact, that’s not a bad thing as that bike was an excellent blend of aero performance, quick handling, surprising rider comfort, and enough room for large volume race tires – on of the early all-rounder aero disc brake road bikes being raced in the pro peloton.

But now, the G8 Disc gets more aero with a more prominent hourglass headtube hiding all cables completely inside the integrated one-piece FSA bar+stem – in through the ACR headset, directly into the frameset for seamless internal shift & brake routing. No cables in the wind means less drag, and the ACR system works with mechanical or electronic drivetrains and doesn’t limit the rotation of your handlebar.

Beyond the cable-free aero headtube, BH further refined the aerodynamics of the entire bike, tweaking tube shapes through CFD & wind tunnel time. Overall tube shapes look similar, but the Kamm tail profiles have been updated throughout, with the thin seatstays getting special attention to reduce drag while maintaining the bike’s unique rider comfort.

BH keeps the idea of the G8 Disc as an all-purpose road race bike with room for big classics-style road tires to “create an all-terrain machine that is capable of overcoming any challenge at the highest level.” That should continue to mean room for 30mm tires in most sizes like the previous bike, and BH confirms that even down to their smallest 50cm XS they are spec’ing 28mm tires inside the short 402mm chainstays.

The race-ready geometry itself remains mostly unchanged from the G7 Disc, leaning toward quick & predictable. And the sloping toptube, dropped seatstays & rear wheel cutout remain.

The new G8 Disc claims a frame weight as low as 850g (down just 20g over the prior model) thanks to BH’s Hollow Core Internal Molding tech that offers precise control of tube wall thickness to ensure accurate carbon placement with little need for extra material.

The new bike still features a 1.5″ tapered carbon steerer, BB386 bottom bracket, an integrated seatmast design with an aero 2-bolt post clamp, flat mount disc brakes, and a new set of hidden levers for the 12mm thru-axles.

The new G8 Disc will be offered in three complete bike build sharing the same updated frameset and integrated ACR aero cable routing system. The 9000€ top-level G8 Disc 7.5 will get a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, a one-piece FSA Metron 5D ACR carbon bar & stem, K-Force carbon cranks, and 40mm deep Vision Trimax carbon wheels.

The middle 6000€ G8 Disc 7.0 swaps to Ultegra Di2, then featuring a two-piece FSA ACR cockpit with an alloy NS stem & carbon SLK compact bar, K-Force carbon cranks, and gets BH’s own 50mm deep Evo carbon wheels.

The most affordable new bike, the 4000€ G8 Disc 6.5 will stick with a mechanical Ultegra groupset, an alloy ACR bar & alloy ACR Energy bar that still features fully internal cable routing, then a set of Shimano RS370 alloy wheels.

The new bikes and details are up on the BH website now, but can’t yet be ordered. They are being raced at the Tour de France right now, though. Final retail availability has not yet been announced. But we expect the bike to hit shops this autumn.

Regarding steel frames yes – but oversized Klein Quantum Pros and Carbon Trek OCLV looked different and started a new era. This seems to be over now.

well actually they havent. It wasnt two years ago that still some big 5 makers didnt have aero. Now they all aero, all have slope, all have low chainstay, all have kam tubes, all have cervelo bb design, all have straight fork with beefy HT. Basically they all look like they came from the same mold. Boredom really. Any bike is a good bike, the best bike is the one with the best afterservice and service knowledge.

Your power of observation is the same reason why eye witness testimony is often proven as suspect.

You have the power of basic observation, but obviously, not of detail.

By nature (& currently, UCI regs) bikes will look similar in a very general sense.

But the tired claim that all new bikes look the same is just comment page filler & noise…

I”m not entirely wrong though. Yeah, they are all born in very unique and individual bike making plants… correct… with every single company’s material engineer… Carbon is so unique, everyone lays it in such different ways. There is ton of creativity. My best friend was a composite engineer for a ProTour team manufacturer. When they signed on, the big boss walked in and shut all of R&D down. “Boys, we are sorry, we now have to start milking that cow with marketing and distribution”… not a single frame made or designed in house anymore… Shapes and components are not entirely by design but mostly to make sure of a tiny bit difference from the mold on the next line… This is especially true when you see incredible athletes win races on absolute shit frames or aluminium frames… -marketing

Well you can’t accuse BH of being a follower because they were one of if not the first to produce an aero frame. I have a 2010 G5 which is still an awesome bike (unfortunately less the disc brakes), but being that I’m now looking for a replacement, am naturally looking to BH again.

Actually, Diamondback probably copied BH…considering the G6 has probably been out longer than Diamondback has been making aero bikes.

Also, the BH Global Concept series since the G6 has had a pretty unique look. As befits my aero bike nerdiness, I made a screensaver for my laptop with all of my favorite modern aero bikes, and the BH G7 doesn’t really have an analogue in terms of frame shape. The new Trek Madone is probably the most similar. It’s not at all like the Aeroad clones (Orca Aero, SystemSix, etc.) that seem to be popping up now-a-days. Even the new SuperSixEVO is basically a take on the new Focus Izalco. At least BH manages to make unique bike frames unlike so many larger brands. I’d also like to point out that the G7 was the aero disc bike innovator before most other brands jumped on that bandwagon, and with 12mm thru-axles to boot.

Same could have been said up until about 1996 when everyone was riding steel. Maybe even until 1999. You’d see some unique aluminum or titanium frames in the peloton but otherwise everything looked the same unless you were within a foot of it to inspect welds and lugs.

I certainly enjoy my BH. It’s a great bike and rides extremely well. I’m sure these do too. The only beef I have is that it looks like they didn’t even try with the paint schemes. Very boring and forgettable.

Agreed, exactly what I thought, although the US might get better colour schemes than the Euro frames.

As an owner of a BH G7 Disc, this is rather exciting! BH produces excellent bikes, and I’ve always loved the Global Concept designs since the G6. They are such under-rated bikes. My only issue with the G8 (despite Vision’s lack of a 130mm, -17 degree Metron 5d bar/stem combo for my personal fit) are the new colour schemes. The blue-ish one is alright; however, I’m not sure how I feel about the celeste/teal/seafoam combined with the red. Killer bike, none-the-less!

The only beef I have with my G6 is the paint. The clear coat is peeling EVERYWHERE. Love the handling of the G6, so much so i’m looking at G7 Disc or G8 (now) despite the paint issues.
