Drooling over the new Orbea Occam, but need something a little more affordable? Orbea’s new Laufey is the latest bike to prove that just because it doesn’t have rear suspension doesn’t mean it can’t be built for trail focused fun.

Starting with a hydroformed aluminum frame that is built around 29″ wheels with a 140mm travel suspension fork, the Laufey adopts the longer, slacker head tube, and steeper seat tube philosophy that has become so popular in mountain biking.

That means you’ll find a 65.5° head tube angle, 75° seat tube angle, and a 25mm longer reach per size. Chainstays aren’t super short at 435mm but they offer clearance for the large 29 x 2.6″ tires on Orbea’s TRYP 30c tubeless rims.

The frame includes modern features like a 12 x 148mm thru axle rear end, ISCG 05 tabs, internal dropper compatibility, and includes a forged chainstay yoke and post mount brake.

Available in three build levels, the Laufey starts at €1299 for the H30 with a 1×11 Shimano drivetrain and Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork. The H10 steps up to a Shimano SLX 1×12 drivetrain with Bomber Z2 fork at €1599/$1899. And the H-LTD comes in at the top with a Shimano XT/SLX 1×12 drivetrain and Fox 34 fork for €1999/$2499. The bikes will all have three stock color options with component customization options available through Orbea’s MyO custom builder.

The perfect bike for trails in my area. Steep up and down but not too rocky.

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. A slack 29er hardtail (with a steep seat tube!) that takes 2.6″ tires.
Awesome.

Wonder what the folks at Lauf have to say about it.

Lauf means Leaf, as in leaf spring. Laufey is the name of Loki’s mother (not father, like the movies). Orbea has/had a Loki model, so it continues the naming scheme.

For more information on the Aesir and Vanir consult your local heathen chapter.

I have the 2018 laufey with 27.5 plus wheels and 130 mm fork, great fun bike, it climps like a tractor, loads and loads of grib from the +tyres
but I wonder if its the same frame or if they have altered the geo a bit for 29’er and 140mm fork
Before it was named Laufey it was called Loki and also had 29″ wheels but only 130mm fork – same frame as my Laufey
are kind of looking for a new wheelset and perhaps to size up to 29″
not that I’m unhappy with the 27,5 plus wheels, just to try something else and to rise the very low bb a bit – my fox 34 fork could also be set to 140mm insted of the 130 now -but dont know how the bike would handle that
