The folks at Outlier have been working to solve the problem of traditional jeans not being made for the way they ride bikes and wearing out every few months. The new Workwear pants are their attempt to make something better than jeans. “We don’t use denim, we aren’t too concerned about fashion and we make no attempt at “authenticity.” When Levi-Strauss invented the jean, we don’t think he copied centuries old pants and fabric. Rather he tried to make the best pants he could with the technology of his day, which is exactly what we did.”

The Workwear pants highly water resistant, quick drying and breathable. They have the Outlier Self-cleaning lotus treatment which prevents staining and resists odors, a curved waistband and gusseted crotch ensure full freedom of movement, retail for $188 and are only offered in slate gray.

What’s the bicycle tie-in here? Is he going to huck that train?

Ha, I see your point. Outlier Tailored Performance is an apparel company that designs high end hipster-ish clothing and accessories. Like the Nailhead hat for example (I just added a link below the last image above). We haven’t yet reviewed anything from them, but I’d love to grab a fixie and try out a $188 pair of pants. Check out their ‘about us’ section for more information: http://outlier.cc/2009/09/an_outlier_philosophy.php

I love the press release–any company that charges $188 for a pair of pants is very concerned about fashion and tries very hard to convey “authenticity.”

i am tired of the levis, dickies, etc for riding. i average over 40 miles a day everyday, and would like what outlier appears to have on their website; a straight, simple, clean lined, well tailored bike pant made with good quality bike-functional material. the problem is in reality their tailoring is terrible. their patterns are poorly designed (too much flare and too high rise as well as bad clowny pockets on og’s and workwear, bad gussett design in workwear, etc). really, jeans have far more moveability than the workwears (they really are the most difficult pants for riding i’ve ever worn). the climbers look cool and with a better cut; but like all the pants, the stitching is twisted or they don’t lay smooth on sides, etc. really, just poor craftsmanship. if they made a climber cut with a thicker material to rest better, or did their workwear with a lower rise, more tapered leg, no gussett, and just a little stretch…i would happily support these guys. bottom line: poorly designed and poor/random/inconsistent construction. hopefully this review will encourage better quality from outlier, as i really do like their asthetic/idea, and i would love a good quality bike pant. otherwise it’s a matter of time before rapha makes one out of their schoeller. maybe rapha’s design will be lame, but the quality will be there.
