Predator Cycles’ Razorback number plate holder updated, now with more carbon!

Just got a few grams left before you meet the UCI minimum weight? Perfect. Predator Cycling’s new Razorback 2 carbon fiber number plate holder is all you need, and it’ll keep your marker flat, stable and in plain sight.

The piece is updated for 2015 to have a hexagonal bolt section to improve crush strength should you be a bit overzealous in the number plate installation. The flat end of it goes under your rear brake caliper, between it and the frame. Check it out on the bike below…

The mount includes a flat carbon plate to add rigidity to your number plate.

All of the carbon is laid up by hand, then CNC’d to get the final shape. This new version has a slightly wider top plate to keep the number stiffer, and keeps the O-ring at the bolt to prevent rotational slippage over the bumps. Pricing for the original was $29.95, this new one will be $35 when it starts shipping near the end of February.

I’m confused how a hexagon would improve strength over a standard cylinder in that configuration. Maybe they are using “funny” math to calculate the strength.

@pfs: I also can’t figure out what would make it much stronger, it seems clearly designed that way to the nut is recessed.

larger cross sectional area to distribute the compressive strain over. basically more material to crush when you over toque the bolt.

@Doug – Perhaps. But if the round part would have had the opportunity to be the same OD as the points on the hexagon then it would have been even stronger. I would have been okay with the statement “We made the cross section larger to make it stronger and made it a hexagonal shape because it captures the bolt better.” I am not okay with stating that the hexagonal shape by itself is stronger.
