There’s light, and then there’s light. Or Extralite, as it may be. That’s certainly on order with one of the lightest 29″ XC wheelsets with a wide internal rim width that we’ve seen. Of course, they also include a heavy price tag and a light rider weight limit, but if weight savings is the main goal, these wheels will be hard to beat.

Built by Radsporttechnik Müller in Germany, these are just one of many wheel builds offered by the light weight specialist. This build starts with the MXC Carbon 29″ rim which features a properly wide, 30mm internal width. The rims are 28h, and weigh just 285g each.

At the center, you’ll find an Extralight HyperBoost 3 hubset with Boost 110 & 148mm spacing. The six-bolt hubs offer freehubs for Shimano HG/SRAM 8/9/10 or SRAM XD (Extralite’s website also lists a MicroSpline option for 12s Shimano). Weight for the hubs alone is listed as 74g for the front and 168g for the rear.

Each wheel is laced with Sapim CX-Super Spoke which is supposedly the lightest aero steel spoke made. The 1.8mm spoke has an aero section that is 0.9mm thick, and 2.0mm wide, with 1.8mm sections at both ends. Each spoke is then held in place with a Sapim black aluminum nipple.

Add all that together, and you get a tubeless 29er wheelset with a 30mm internal width rim for under 1060g. Pretty impressive. Though it should be for €2,199 (about $2,478)—but that does at least include tubeless tape. There’s also the 90kg (198lb) rider weight limit to consider.

So, about the same price as many other options (Roval, SC, others)…less weight savings than if I skimp on a tad of sealant (or update to a 2022 34SC)…and no lifetime warranty (that I would trust). I am good, yep. I am good.

The prospect of rivaling the Roval Control SL 29er is intriguing. With a price under that flagship, while weighing significantly less, the Muller would be hard to pass up, or at the very least, warrant further investigation.

The link provided in this article is coming back as “404 page not found.” I was able to Google their name and found their website, but having placed an order on Feb. 18 and have not heard back from them, even after asking for a status on my order (a pair of the ultralight wheelset) gives some concern. Has anyone ordered from them?
