Reserve Wheels has announced its first line of Alloy Wheels for MTB, said to rival the performance of their Carbon Wheelsets but at a more affordable price point. The Reserve SL|30 and Reserve HD|30 come in to service Trail, All-Mountain and Enduro. Both 29″ and 27.5″ options are priced at $699 USD, and are sold with Reserve’s Lifetime Warranty for the original owner.

As the name suggests, the Reserve 30|SL AL and 30|HD AL wheels feature a welded aluminum rim with a 30mm internal width designed to seat 2.3″ to 2.5″ tires. Both are made from 6069 Aluminum, and see an asymmetric rim bed with offset spoke holes, a popular design feature implemented by high-end wheel manufacturers to build stiffer, stronger and more reliable wheels. Reserve say the asymmetry improves the bracing angles and equalizes spoke tensions between the drive and non-drive side spokes.

Reserve Lifetime Warranty Details

A dented rim with a paint chip, or a dented rim that is not holding air, a separated seam or crack at a spoke hole, will all get you a free replacement under warranty. If the dent isn’t so bad, there’s no paint chipping and the rim is still holding air, then you can get a crash replacement for 50% of the retail price of the rim. More details can be found on the Reserve Wheels website.

I am skeptical of all things labeled “Lifetime Warranty” from Santa Cruz.

No matter who’s offering a “Lifetime Warranty” is simply a marketing hook. Don’t think too hard about it, is what it is.
