According to the Urban Dictionary, the word Syre means “blunt, straightforward, and independent” or “when boys act silly on Facebook Chat”. Either way, I get the sense from their website that Syre, a new bike company hailing from Saint Petersburg, Russia, fits both definitions. Introducing the Syre Punkcake Gravel Bike.

This gravel bike is a custom, high-performance carbon offering. Syre says it’s “designed to keep the rider at one with the bike and have fun with every ride”.

The Syre crew says that the Punkcake got its name from the mixture of the words “punkbecause we are young rebels, and pancake because well, everyone loves pancakes“.

Hmmm…ok, fair enough.

The Syre Punkcake looks like an all-purpose gravel bike that can be used on or off-road. It has classic, clean and simple lines that lend to its classic aesthetic.

3-Syre Punkcake frameset

There are a few geometry highlights, like the double dropped chainstay allowing for the Syre Puncake to run either 700×50 or 650bx2.5 with room for a double crankset (up to 53t) upfront if you desired.

The one-piece front triangle of the Syre Punkcake includes the bottom bracket unit as well as the YOke. The chainstays for the Syre Punkcake are only 420mm long. To fit 700×50 or 650bx2.5 tires and a double crankset with up to a 53t front ring, took some engineering in that area.

Anton, the Chief Design Engineer said that he “had to narrow the chainstay very much (to the state of a monolithic plate), but at the same time keep the internal routing.” He continues, “This unit is made of a single product as part of the front triangle, which also complicates the laying up. To be able to form the cable channel, I had to learn how to make a separate bladder.”

These details around the bottom bracket/chainstay junction and the 7mm forward shift of the seat tube, allow the Syre Punkcake frame to be used for many different types of builds, allowing for fat or skinny tires, 1x or 2x drivetrains all with the 420mm chainstay length, and internal cable routing staying intact.

Entering at the top of the headtube, cables are routed with the help of internal routing channels that are built into the Syre Punkcake frame. This allows you to keep the classically clean lines that were built into the Punkcake’s design. Combined with the integrated seat clamp detail and it’s a nice touch.

The designers at Syre Bicycles chose the geometry of the Punkcake so the bike can “feel like an extension of the rider, no matter what the terrain”.

Lemme send over some cash to russia while their dictator bombs a country. This is awful…

While the bombing is terrible, did you advocate against US goods when they lied to get world support to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan?

I did in fact.Which wasn’t very hard since just about every single US made goods is made in China, so you can waste more at a lower cost, except of course, war machines. Those are still proudly murican… Hope Dimitri takes the street when its time.

There are tons of products made in the USA! let me repeat, TONS!!! However, most people don’t take the time to look beyond amazon. I personally make it a point to search out brands that produce products in the US.

FINALLY a brand lists the offset of the seat tube and its angle instead of some dumb “theoretical” angle to a random seat height.
This is the next piece of geometry understanding after Stack/Reach simplified that relationship.

If your seat tube has any kind of curve or it’s offset from a straight line to the BB, that’s really the only way to get an accurate angle

Sorry Syre guys.. but you think I’d be buying from any Russian company right now? Fair dues to BR for highlighting that bit. If it wasn’t for the legal entity part of the Contact Us section of the Syre site you might miss that bit.

Someone will reply saying I’m a virtue signaller because America was in the Gulf.

You are just the victim of heavy one-sided war propaganda and asymmetrical information. Your government does business with Russia, so stop this nonsense and show a bit more respect to people that are just trying to make the bike world more diverse and who have no single share in this stupid horrible war!

Fair but we should also remember that just like the US and China, the Russian people are not always necessarily reflected by their government.

What did the company do? Not everyone in Russia supports the war. I am honestly appalled by the attitude in sibling comments.

Of course they don’t. But a total stop on business with Russia helps to build public pressure against the regime. It’s all or nothing on that. Sorry if that impacts what looks like a cool bike business but Ukranians come first.

So, everyone should stop buying from small businesses, but purchasing oil and gas for billions euro is ok? What a hypocrisy.

I’m afraid you know nothing about regimes my friend. Iran has been under heavy sanctions for 45 years. Did the regime die? No. It doesn’t work like that, unfortunately.

There were plenty of regime changes after the Berlin wall fell, not the same but shows the possibilities when the people rise up. I am Czech, we had the Soviet Union occupy my country in a “friendly visit” for 20 years. Nothing against Russian people, just the current regime. At the same time complete international pressure on Russia will hopefully help accelerate the fall of the current regime and free the Russian people.

Ahoj David! “Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války” is one of my top 10 books ever and I’m going to read it again now. Not only it shows the absurd and disgusting nature of any war but also it reflects the character of Chech people which I love and respect. I grew up in the Soviet Union and I found out about the invazion only when the SU split up. It was a top secret back then.
Anyway, regarding our today’s reality if you want to know my opinion tell me your email and I will write to you in private.

I don’t think an embargo alone will change things. But it adds up, hopefully, maybe. If it should be more nuanced I don’t know how. Maybe it turns Russians against the rest of the world. The media plays a big part and this is a new situation for people on both sides who can’t understand it all.
I get that governments are buying oil and gas. I don’t make those decisions like you didn’t decide to invade Ukraine. I can only consider all this when voting and where I spend my money is a vote of sorts.
Would I boycott a magazine that reviewed your bike, or criticize someone for buying it? No. That would be going too far. Would I enjoy riding with you guys somewhere sometime and would I learn something talking about this over a beer after? I’m sure I would.

Excuse me David but you are not 100% correct: your country was occupied by the Sovien Union, not by “Russians” or “Russia”.

Really well thought through frameset that has all the modern features, including invisible cable routing and threaded bb.
I don’t see how not buying frames from this small company from Russia trying to push the bike industry forward and not supporting the current regime will help take Putin down? You should first question your governments who are buying gas from Russia and spending billions of €/£ that go straight into Russian government’s pockets.

Hi everybody! Peace, love and prosperity to all. It is so sad to read these comments…

We are just a young private company making bikes and trying to survive. The sad truth is that this world is ruled by transnational capitals. While simple people are dying some European countries keep buyng Russian gas, France inceased imports of Russian uranium for its nuclear industry and USA cancelled sanctions on Russian fertilizers and increazed its import. So who is really financing this war?

Please think about it and let’s focus on bikes, let’s enjoy them or criticize them, lets discuss their geometry etc. but please stop spreading hatred and accusing people who are not guilty. Let’s talk bikes, not politics here. Again, peace and love to each and everyone. Dixi.

I have replied to this one before but I don’t see my answer so here I go again.
Ben, building bikes these days is about evolution rather than revolution. Yes, Open were pioneers, they made a breakthrough and we respect them deeply as pioneers. So our bikes are not “ripped off” as you say but inspired by Open, and not only: they are also inspired by old, simple bikes. This being said, we’ve made some internal and external improvements and we’ve created our own progressive geometry. If you put together an Open and a Syre you will see the difference clearly. If you ride an Open and a Syre, you will feel the difference.

What are you comparing to form a disagreement? You use the phrase clearly, but your comparison is anything but clear. A rip off is a copy/paste and this is not that… In almost every size there are clear differences. CS Length, ST Angle, and BB Drop are the only consistencies I can find… you’ll find dozens of copies if that’s all you compare. Also…

I have respect for that too (plus the fact you’re engaging here). You’re not just buying off the peg from Asia. I don’t know if you actually could right now but that’s not the point, I’m not saying you did all that R+D for supply restriction reasons. You’re making something and building a bike brand and it’s unfortunate there’s other things going on that get in the way. It has me questioning my take on the trade embargo point.

A 38T/10-44 has the almost the same range as a 46-30/12-32
Considering the wheels are optimized around big tires, I’d say the focus of this bike is rougher terrain where clutch style wide range derailleurs are more common. Of course some might miss the opportunity to run newer 2x like 43-30/10-36 but it’s a small sacrifice for an otherwise versatile bike.. Source: Gear Ratio Comparison

the frame geometry is more like a cx bike than anything to do with grvl.
And look at the front-centre value, you will have a lot of problems with foot/heel contact.

If you look at the competition and correct for a 50mm tire you’ll notice they all come out within 2-3mm of the Syre. Lot’s of options out there with this tire clearance and a less progressive geometry… similarly there aren’t many CX-ish grav bikes with this tire clearance…you can’t have your punk cake and eat it too.

No, just no. First let Russia finish the war, then you can promote its companies. And decent Russians, if they want to make bikes so badly, can always emigrate – or protest locally if they want to make a difference.

The timing for a Russian made bicycle is probably not that great, but I’m pretty sure Dmitry is just a hard working person just trying to make a living, which I’m sure is pretty hard for the majority or Russian citizens. Being that the very limited trade that Russia is experiencing due to Putin’s unpopular invasion of Ukraine, I would think that Dmitry is just trying to put food on his table. As we’ve seen, anyone that speaks out against Putin or the war are silenced, possibly never to be heard from again. I give Dmitry credit for at least of trying to promote his brand.
After/ if, this war gets over and the world goes back to somewhat normal, I’d have no problem supporting this brand

You see it right. We started this whole thing a couple of years ago and on February 24 we were as shocked and terrified as the rest of the world was. So now we are just sweating it out trying to survive because we can’t stop feeding our children. I am not complaining because I realize that people in Ukrain are living much harder times than we do but I don’t like being accused of things I’ve never done or supported. Thank you for you comprehension!

It’s a shame to see the jingoistic comments Dimitry. I have an OPEN and my main peeve is that you can’t replace a derailer cable without removing the BB, AND the BB is press-fit. Does the internal routing of your new design fix this? Another feature the OPEN misses, which I suspect yours does too, is the rear derailleur cable exit port? If the cable can exit somewhere OTHER than from just above the rear thru-axle it opens up the usage of MTB derailers as well as road-based derailleurs. Keep up the good work. I nearly brought a Triton from the other Dimitry, at one stage! Let’s hope the conflict stops sometime soon for everyone’s sake.

Insert the housing from the rear, you can have the Bottom bracket installed.
Push the housing until it appears in the headtube, pull it inside the top headset bearing and it’s done.

In fact, gentlemen citizens of the United States, you are such victims of propaganda, as is most of the world. If you look realistically at what is happening in Ukraine, you will understand that historically Ukraine and Russia were a single state. Moreover, Russia started from Ukraine and expanded to the east. The struggle between the centers of influence, the same as between your north and South, has been going on for hundreds of years, and it is foolish to think that the division of the unified Slavic tribes into two camps, that is, two countries, can end in something other than war. This has been clear since the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is a long-standing, ancient dispute for power between the western and eastern parts of the former Russian Empire. Just as the artificial division of any country eventually leads to wars. If the United States were divided into two countries, they would be fighting for power. Look at all the countries that your government has had a hand in dividing – there will be war everywhere sooner or later. And it’s terrible, but that’s how the psychology of the masses works.
