Seven is introducing a new 2×2 frame building option that creates a bike with two distinct personalities by quickly Hot Swapping between wheelsets. The SevenDuro 2×2 Scrambler is their all-road gravel solution, using unique tubular chainstays to go from gravel-friendly 700c to trail-ready 650B in just a minute. Oh, and the Hot Swap 2×2 concept goes fully off-road too, with the ti hardtail Sola 2×2…

The concept of a single bike that can do double duty as a jack-of-all-trades with a simple wheel swap isn’t really a new concept. Pretty much every modern 650B Road Plus bike (or tire) we’ve seen over the last couple of years has talked about how 650x47mm tires are essentially the same outer diameter as something like a 700x30mm tire. But often those bikes tried to pair traditional road riding with a gravel option.

What Seven is doing is building on their years of crafting custom bikes to deliver a bike for two distinct riding styles that are a bit more cross compatible. The 2×2 gravel bike then has two faces – the SevenDuro that is optimized for fast, hilly gravel & dirt road riding, and then the Scrambler for mixed trail riding where sections of singletrack are connected with sections of paved roads.

Chopped & Dropped 2×2 tubular chainstay design

The way they do it is by using their unique chopped tubular chainstay construction they call the GordiaNot that gives ample tire clearance while keeping chainstays short for such big tires, and even allows the use of a double chainring setup, depending a bit on customer preference. While a lot of production 650b bikes use a similar-looking dropped chainstay layout, Seven’s ‘Chopped Chainstays’ actually still use traditional round tubes – kinking the horizontal part of the stay, and welding it to a short stub extending down from the bottom bracket.

This is said to better resist flex and has improved fatigue life, compared to plate or yoke-style solutions. They also say their Chopped 1″ stays, combined with fastback seatstays, delivers twice the rear end drivetrain stiffness as popular carbon race bikes they’ve tested against.

SevenDuro 2×2 gravel & dirt road mode

Seven built the 2×2 gravel bike specifically for their local riding, but as their bikes are made to order, they’ll be able to adapt one to your riding styles as well. This bike’s SevenDuro mode is optimized for 700×32-38mm tires (32mm Teravail Galena 32mm here) as more of a pure endurance gravel riding setup.

But then 60 seconds of Hot Swap to another wheelset while keeping everything else the same, and you get…

Scrambler 2×2 singletrack & road transfer mode

Scrambler mode goes to smaller diameter 650B wheels and up to a 2″ tire for more tire volume, lower tire pressures & increased trail grip (here with 47mm wide WTB Byways.)

Going beyond the one minute wheel change, Seven also says you can do a longer swap with a shorter stem, and a wider flared drop bar for a more aggressive trail position if you do more technical trail riding.

SevenDuro 2×2 Scrambler Tech Details

The titanium 2×2 gravel frame itself will fit up to 700x43mm or 650x50mm tires, still with short for a gravel bike 420mm GordiaNot chainstays. The matching Matador full carbon fork even takes that up to 700×45 or 650×54. Seven says this particular frame is optimized for up to a 42t single chainring build, although in this steep terrain iteration it is sporting a 28t ring. But at the same time a road compact 50/34 will still fit if a rider wants a broader gearing range and smaller steps.

The bike uses 12mm thru-axles front & rear, and flat mount brakes that let you run 140-203mm rotors. This bike features Seven’s weight trimming XV package, but you can build a 2×2 with their standard setup as well. It also includes optional S&S couplers to make it into a travel bike that will fit in an airline friendly sized suitcase. Seven is all about custom so feel free to pick and choose whatever features you need.

SevenDuro 2×2 Scrambler Pricing

As for cost, that depends a lot on what options you end up with. A straight gauge Evergreen S gravel bike which is probably the most affordable base that could be adapted into a 2×2 gravel bike retails starting $3000 for a stock frame or around $6700 complete with a mechanical Ultegra & hydraulic disc brake build. Build your own SevenDuro 2×2 Scrambler gravel bike up from there.

Want to go more off-road? Maybe instead, try the…

Seven Sola 2×2 dual wheel option hardtail mountain bike

The dual-wheel bike design can get adapted in an off-road hardtail too. The Sola 2×2 is meant to Hot Swap between summer & fall fast 29er mode or winter & spring 27.5+ mode to go anywhere when the trails get soft and snow/ice/mud pile up.

The solution is the same – GordiaNot chopped chainstays & a wheel/tire combo swap. The mountain bike side also makes a bar/stem swap even easier so you could get a more upright, relaxed position to go with the fatter tires…

…or more aggressive low position for a more XC racer feel on the faster 29er wheels.

I kind of like it. Innovative way to do a dropped stay. Good for them.

Any ideas on the stay length? Last I heard their “short” stays were 455. I would be surprised if there were less than 430, which is what most have had on their hardtail mountain bikes for years now.

For the mountain bike? depends on what chainrings and tire you want to clear exactly but we’re typically looking into the 420-430 range.

From the sublime of that Bontrager frame to the hacked together in a shed look of Seven. I wonder why the dropped chainstay has come into fashion but elevated stay hasn’t made a return, some of those looked lovely way back when. I hope Seven revise this with a neater solution like a plate bridge.

So… they add a feature that’s a well-known solution on many other current frames then posit that by configuring it differently you’ll end up with different configurations. Seven, your Ti is great but your marketing department needs work.

There’s absolutely no reason for bikes to be symmetrical from a functional standpoint but my OCD can not handle this at all.

I’m surprised no one has brought the Nishiki Alien back yet. Zero suck…
