Today, London-based Science in Sport (‘SiS’) introduced its new Beta Fuel nutrition products, specially engineered for endurance athletes. It heralds the line as a “complete fueling solution” with a new MDX to fructose ratio optimized for carbohydrate absorption. It’s now hitting the consumer market after an internal trial period that started in 2018.

Beta Fuel Development

Beta Fuel first appeared on the world stage of athletic nutrition during Giro d’Italia in 2018, and SiS has been refining it ever since. Professor James Morton, Director of Performance Solutions for SiS, points to lab work that changed the company’s mind and ultimately differentiated Beta Fuel.

Testing included elements like monitored rides under controlled conditions at SiS facilities. Athletes got Beta Fuel as prescribed, and results were tracked. Through that research, they found that the ideal MDX to fructose ratio for carb uptake is 1:0.8 (updated from the traditional 2:1). That led to a bevy of claimed performance upgrades for Beta Fuel.

According to research cited by SiS, the 1:0.8 ratio enhances exogenous CHO oxidation by up to 17% when compared to the original 2:1 blend. It also claims to increase the percentage of carb oxidization from 62% to 74%.

SiS even says the ratio helps reduce stomach fullness and gastrointestinal distress. According to SiS, Beta Fuel is ideal for those training over 2.5 hours.

Varieties

Beta Fuel will come in drink powder, chew (bar), and two gel formats. One of the gels includes nootropics, a boutique and “highly adaptable” class of cognitive enhancers. Flavors include orange, apple, lemon-lime, strawberry and lime, and red berry.
