Here’s one of the strangest (cycling related, anyway) press releases we’ve seen in a while: SRAM has partnered with the New York Yacht Club American Magic team in their effort to win the 2024 America’s Cup race.

Details are not yet revealed, but they tease that SRAM will provide in-boat technologies and that the crew has been testing them. I mean, Shimano makes fishing gear, so…

PRESS RELEASE: SRAM, the world’s most innovative bicycle component manufacturer, announced a partnership with the New York Yacht Club American Magic racing team in their bid to win the 37th America’s Cup.

“This is an amazing opportunity to not only demonstrate our products and technologies in a new and unique way but be a part of one of the most historic and viewed sporting events in the world,” said SRAM CEO Ken Lousberg. “SRAM componentry will be integral to the success of this yacht.”

“NYYC American Magic is investing a lot of time and resource into developing and testing systems for our next-generation AC75. SRAM has 35 years of experience working with high-performing teams, and we’re excited to be collaborating and pushing the boundaries in our pursuit to win the 37th America’s Cup,” said Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and President of Sailing Operations for NYYC American Magic.

New York Yacht Club American Magic will spend all winter in Pensacola before relocating to Barcelona for the final push into the 37th America’s Cup campaign in 2024. The 37th America’s Cup will take place in Barcelona, Spain, in September and October 2024.

SRAM and American Magic will provide more specific details of the agreement, as well as in-boat technologies, later this year.

About the New York Yacht Club
The New York Yacht Club was founded in 1844 when nine New York yachtsmen met in New York Harbor aboard John Cox Stevens’ yacht, Gimcrack. A year later, the Club’s first clubhouse was built in Hoboken, N.J. The Club’s Annual Regatta was first run in 1846. The Club was the keeper of the America’s Cup from 1851 to 1983, and it organized the first transatlantic race in 1866. The Club maintains two exquisite clubhouses, one on 44th Street in the heart of New York City, known for its Model Room and extensive nautical library. The second clubhouse, at Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., annually hosts some of North America’s most prestigious sailing events, including the Annual Regatta, Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup and the Queen’s Cup.

About American Magic
Formed in October 2017 by Bella Mente Racing, Quantum Racing, and the New York Yacht Club, American Magic represents a joint vision to win the America’s Cup, the highest prize in sailing and the oldest trophy in international sport. New York Yacht Club American Magic brings together two highly successful racing programs with the most prestigious yacht club in the world. Both are united by a determination to regain the America’s Cup, reconnect the American sailing base with the premier event in the sport, and elevate the quality of competitive sailing in the United States. The name, American Magic, is a nod to the New York Yacht Club’s storied America’s Cup history; a combination of the boat the trophy is named for, and the first boat to defend it.

My money is on powermeters being used. Why? SRM has actually made quite a few for such going back I think 20-25 years?

The technology is pure pull. This is just Board minions shacking hands between each other and giving it a spin like Prada technology. This is cycling, pure F1 model without the money and with fake ethics…

Patriot is outfitted with Cyclor Grinders, similar to what ETNZ used to the win the cup in Bermuda in 2017. The cranks for the cyclors are supplied by Quarq
