strava-app-adds-auto-pause-and-weekly-goals

Strava inches ever closer to having its mobile app all but replace a dedicated cycling computer, assuming you’re willing to put your smartphone front and center on the handlebar.

In May, they added routes and segments, letting you see those targets in real time as you rode along and create routes to hit as many of them as you can per ride. Once created, the routes would display on your phone, tracking you along the map as you ride…which makes it easier to nail down specific mileage or altitude gains, or just explore new roads without getting lost.

Now, they’ve added a feature common to cycling computers: Auto Pause. No longer will your moving time be much shorter than your total workout time, leaving you with blanks every time you hit a traffic light or stop to snack or relieve yourself. For premium members, you’ll also be able to see your weekly goals displayed right from the app.

Strava’s app is also integrated with Apple’s new iOS 8, letting you start and stop recording through a new Notification Center widget, eliminating the need to navigate to the Strava app during a workout. The
widget also displays real-time activity information including elapsed time, speed or pace, and total distance traveled. This new version 4.2 is available now for iOS, and coming very soon for Android via Google Play.

Now, they’ve added a feature common to every other cycling app: Auto Pause.

Fixed.

Why use auto pause? It still takes the total amount of time to complete the ride. I like to know how long I was moving, but also how much time to allow for the next attempt.

Strava needs to be more proactive in banning downhill KOM segments in key concentrated multi-user trail areas. Encouraging competitive runs on crowded trails is setting back access decades. I don’t want to punish those who know the right time to ride a trail when its not crowded and know how to yield without riding off trail, but there are way to many stravassholes out there. Maybe time blocks that wont allow users to contest a often crowded downhill KOM on weekends or weekdays 4pm -sunset?

Still doesn’t have live metrics for me. Still have to run another app to get cycling computer metrics like current speed/cadence/hr

Now if only Strava would add real time speed instead of just average speed that is so inaccurate its just useless.

This would not be an issue worth fixing if people created segments between lights rather than through the lights. That one KOM obsessed guy should find better routes. I really hope their famous issue with pausing and resuming, in which the GPS gets a little confused, doesn’t happen more frequently.

WHO STOPS AT STOPLIGHTS!?!?!? That is not in the spirit of strava, win at all costs. This is a really lame feature.

What I hate is the different GPS data each variation of iPhone collects. I will ride with four buddies, who each have an iPhone 4, 4S, 5, and a 5S. Invariably, someone will PR the rest of us by 60 seconds over a 10-minute segment, even though we finished and started together.

And that @##$%&* will brag it about it, too, even though he was last in the group!

If you care about Strava KOMs you are truly the lowest form of pond scum.

Its been well over a year since they added anything to their website of interest to me. Seems like they just spend all their time working on the mobile apps.

At least add the capability for clubs to create their own challenges.

They need to differentiate between mountain and road cycling and start adding some challenges for MTB.

@sketchemo, for road, they need to differentiate between those who suck wheel in a pack, and those who have legitimately busted a lung solo. Without legitimate heart rate and power data, these segment “KOM’s” are a waste of time.

The sooner Strava dies, the better.

Strava puts a lightning bolt next to power numbers when a PM is used to signify they are more accurate than the estimated numbers elsewhere in the leaderboard. They should put asterisks next to rides recorded by cell phone to signify the lack of precision vs a garmin.

this new feature plainly doesn’t work. Elapsed time and moving time for an entire ride are practically the same. Yet, if you look at a long segment, you can see moving time and elapsed time that are far different from one another — more than your entire ride’s moving time and elapses time were different from one another.
