Yes, eBike racing is a thing. But if you’ve been to Sea Otter or other events, you already know this. While still considered a bit taboo, Bosch and Troy Lee Designs are teaming up for another stop for the Boogaloo.

After the first stop of the year at the Kamikaze Games in Mammoth, CA, the Boogaloo is headed to SoCal with the hopes of another sold out race. Rather than racing on contentious trails, the Boogaloo is held on a specifically made track – which is almost more of a motocross track, which makes sense. After a Le Mans style start, the bikes went through a number of berms, jumps, and even a massive step up near the end.

The course at Vail Lake (Temecula, not Colorado), will be similar, though Bosch says that it will be built by legends like Brian Lopes, David Cullinan, Ryan Hughes and previous Pro Class champions Victor Sheldon and Evander Hughes.

Taking place on Saturday Nov. 4, the race is limited to 32 slots for the amateur class which is $60 per rider, with pre-registration open now. There will also be 24 slots in a special invite-only pro class with a $2,000 purse for the top five finishers. You do not need your own eBike to compete – multiple manufacturers including Raleigh, Specialized, Haibike, and Bulls will be on hand to provide both demos and race bikes.

Maybe it’s explained but how does this even work from an assist standpoint? Is into regulated to a certain amount? Is the duration so one has to technically conserve battery to make it to the end adding additional strategy? Or is it’s just an exhibition style race to show how “awesome” these bikes are so I run out and buy one and equip myself is gawdy TLD gear?

“Class 1 eMTB is a specific classification for human powered sustainable use on any trail, path or riding area. Class 1 eMTB models are defined as “a bicycle with fully operable pedals, and an electric motor under 750 Watts peak power that must be pedaled to activate the motor and that ceases to provide power above 20 mph”.”

Just because “others” say so, it’s not a bicycle. Period. It has a Motor whether you Pedal it or not. It has a Motor. When people say it does not… it has a motor. AND… if it has a Motor, it is not legal on non motorized trails. It’s banned in Moab, it’s banned in any Orange County Parks, it’s a “Motor” cycle. It means STRAVA has to come up with pedal assist categories for those who are men and ride human powered non motorized vehicles and then the panzies that ride a bicycle with a Motor.

And what you now find are three kinds of people that defend them. Your LBS who have dollar signs in their eyes and have lost sight of the pure sport of cycling, manufacturers who are more concerned with bottom lines, and those who claim they can justify being a cyclist but too lazy to get out a train to really be one. In other words….posers.

Hmm, those are both brands I like, but I will think twice about buying either now that they are promoting ebike racing. I am not a retro grouch or a curmudgeon, but I doubt those promoting ebikes are the same ones out maintaining trails and sweating access issues. I know this subject has been beat to death, but the impact these vehicles pose can’t be taken lightly. And I’m not just referring to impact to trails, it is also the impact to the spirit of the sport.

I’m all for e-bikes but ‘up to’ 750 watts is just absurd. When these are putting out vastly more power than the rider, it’s hardly an ‘assist’ so much as replacement. Make the “assist” limit 150watts and now I’m for it again.

I was thinking the same thing – it’s starting to be time to boycott some of these brands

This kinda race is neither sport nor exciting to watch. bicycle racing is still like watching paint dry, and adding a few hundred watts is like opening the window. Face it, if one wants to spectate motorsports this is a joke meant to promote ugly and overpriced TLD wear. Want to participate in motorsports? buy a real motorcycle, and prepare to roost. Braap!

I think this is a joke and that the promoters are a joke. Troy Lee and Bosch and all sponsors noted will never ever get another cent of my investment ever again. (deleted) It’s promoting what some mistakenly think are mountain bikes as mountain bikes. I hope those “eMtB’ers are only training on designated motorized trails and fire roads in prep for their Moto event. Pathetic.

This is April fools right? Why are we racing ebikes? And let’s not be fooled, they are ebikes, motorized vehicles.

So did single speed just drop to the second most annoying category at racing events?

What does your badazz helmet giveaway have anything to do with the subject? As long as you ride on your motorized accessible fire roads and closed courses? Have at it.

I just laugh at all this people complaining. I am sure your parents are complaining that you are 35 and living in their basement but that is a different story all together. All of you that bitch and moan about how they are not going to support these brands any more when you probably only own a free TLD T-shirt you got at a shop demo for bikes you never were going purchase anyway. And you are all too cool and hard-core and are only purist cyclists and its your way any no other way. So here is the deal soon you will not have any bikes or companies you will be able to support because soon they will all have electric bikes. That is just a fact. My advice is stop complaining and stop worrying about everyone else and everything else and just ride your 2005 Enduro that you bought on Craigslist.

Dave, I’m not 35, I’m 59… don’t live in my parents basement and can probably put the hurt on you on a mountain bike. The whole point of a bicycle is it is human powered. The whole point of non motorized trails is that only non motorized can access them. The complaint Dave is Trail Advocacy and the concerns that come with a mixed bag of classifications and confused perceptions of other trail user groups. Your problem is you are short sighted or self focused not seeing the complications this produces for the years of trail advocacy. i get this was a closed course, but the message is clear in the local bike shops and at these events that it is okay to ride wherever you want on these bikes and that is simply not true.

And you know what? It’s still America so we have a right to voice our opinions and our concerns.

A class 1 ebike is human powered. There is no throttle on class 1 ebikes so if you don’t pedal, you don’t move. The rider controls the amount of assist similar to choosing gears ranging from no assist to 500% assist. This is progress similar to derailer gears, suspension, carbon fibre, disc brakes, Nuvinci hubs, fat tires, 29” wheels etc.
ebikes are fun and a better way to increase personal mobility. Naysayers are negative thinkers and hypocritics.
