Vorsprung Corset air shock oversized canister sleeve upgrade for Fox Shocks mountain bike components

If we learning anything from our Suspension Setup Series last year, it’s that tinkering is good and that more tinkering can be even better. Once you move beyond the basics of air pressure and knob fiddling, there’s air volume adjustments.

We’ve upgraded our own shocks in both directions, using volume spacers to reduce it to help the rear end keep up with a bigger-than-stock fork, and adding an oversized can to improve overall “bouyancy” to an otherwise firm XC bike. The latter is exactly what the new Vorsprung Corset air sleeve upgrades are offering for Fox Shocks. Available for a wide range of models and sizes, they increase the air volume, which gives the shocks a bit less resistance to initial movement and a cushier mid stroke. The result should be more supple performance on the small stuff and smoother action throughout the middle of its movement…

The Corset has been in development for two years, tested throughout Whistler’s amazingly diverse bike park and surrounding trails as well as on the EWS (Enduro World Series) races. It’s made in Canada and retails for $150 CAD.

They make a big thing about the difference in spring curves in the first 10% of shock stroke, but I thought the whole point of sag is that you are hardly ever in that “zone” anyway. You’ve overcome any stiction in the first few mm’s shock stroke by just sitting on the bike.

Nice stuff.

@Matt, As they point out, the initial travel can be important for when the wheel drops into holes and lifting the bike (pumping terrain). There is more going on than just the stiction break-away at the first 10% of shock stroke. What looks to be a larger negative spring than a stock Fox air-can, will impact the rest of the stroke as well.

Set the spring first! Great to have options.

Stiction will be exactly the same, because it’s still a rubber seal lubricated with oil. The increased negative air spring volume will create a more linear stroke over the first 50% of the stroke, lowering the springrate for the first 10%, and increasing it around Sag. This will work best on rough paths where the wheel will lift of on various roots and rocks

Please don’t take this comment as if I’m trying to be a smartass. From the looks and the description, it seems to be a Debonair sleeve, but made for FOX shocks. From dealing with several Float and RP3 iterations, and later experimenting briefly with a RS Monarch Debonair, I feel this product could be a great addition for those in the upper end of the weight scale. Havibg a more supple beginning stroke without sacrificing bottom out resistance sounds really good.

I see this product as a fail just in the name alone. Getting MEN to wear a Corset is going to be a pretty hard sell guys…
