When Wolf Tooth Components first introduced their Pack Wrench, it was all about portability. Well, portability and light weight. The idea was to create a tool that was durable enough to use at home in your shop, but also light enough to take with you on the road. While the tool had a bit of multi-functionality going on then, it’s been recently revised to make it perfectly compatible with their newest addition – bottom bracket tools.

Precision machined from 7075-T6 aluminum, each BB tool is designed to work with a 3/8″ square drive as well as a 1″ hex socket.

That 1″ socket part makes it perfectly compatible with the WTC Pack Wrench. Thanks to the built in magnets, the end of the tool features swappable light weight adapters for things like cassette lock rings, Cinch and ISIS splines, and large hex wrenches that you wouldn’t want to carry with you. At the other end of the tool is an external BB cup spline/Centerlock rotor tool as well. The Pack Wrench sells for $32.95, and each light weight insert is $18.95.

But since the industry is the industry, that BB tool on the Pack Wrench is only compatible with a few of the bikes out there. To allow you to work on the others, WTC has added five new bottom bracket tools to cover the spectrum with 16 and 12 notch tools. As a bonus, each tool meant for Shimano BBs includes an 8 spline dust cap tool built into the end. Non-Shimano tools get a 16mm hex tool instead.

As mentioned, you can use these tools either with the Pack Wrench, or with a standard 3/8″ square drive socket which will be helpful for torquing BB cups. The outside of the tool is also notched to allow you to use the tool by hand when starting the threads or for quickly removing the cup once loose. Since these tools are meant to travel, the weights are listed as BBS3916 – 69g, BBS4116 – 69g, BBS4416 – 71g, BBS4612 – 78g, and BBS4816 – 80g. Each tool is made in the U.S. and available now for $29.95.

external BB cup spline/Centerlock rotor tool will only work on the front wheel. Due to it’s low profile the cup won’t fit over the taller rear hub’s end caps. A better design is Park Tools BBT-69.2 Bottom Bracket Tool, but unfortunately it’s made of very soft aluminium and from experience the socket burrs easily if not placed perpendicular.

Should have been designed for a 24mm socket instead of 1″, so it works with every other tool (Shimano, Campy, Pedro’s) except for Park. The 1″ socket is a carryover before metric won.
