Dynamic Bicycles claims to have the world’s first drop-bar road bike with an internally geared hub.  Using Shimano’s new Versa shifter/brake levers made to the work with the internal gear Alfine hub, the Dynamic Synergy looks clean with no derailleurs.  This means a single speed up front, but for commuters or beginners or those that just want to keep it simple, it should be fine.

Dynamic says that by using the Alfine 8-speed hub, the bike acheives 95% of the gear range of a compact double and 92% of the range of a full triple.  Like Shimano’s normal road levers, it uses a separate up-shift and down-shift lever on the right hand brake lever.  They can be shifted anytime, even when stopped or just cruising (not pedaling).

Dynamic’s Patrick Perugini says “Our mission is to make bicycling more enjoyable for more people – that includes all areas of cycling – from transportation to recreation. The Synergy is another example of how we are trying to attract new enthusiasts to bicycling by making bikes that are more fun to ride and less work to maintain.”

At 21 lbs and $1,399 with a range of sizes (4 men’s, 3 women’s), it looks like a solid little package.  Now, if they just sent their PR photos without watermarks, we’d be completely happy.

BUT WAIT…THERE’S MORE!

All of the bikes on their website are currently 10% off!  Act now and you can score your very own Synergy for just $1,299!  (which is only 7%, but whatever)

Another “World’s First” claim from the people who developed the “New technology” of shaft drive bicycles. I think it was in the late 19th Century that French company L’Acatane did most of the development and in the 20th century it was Sheldon Brown who published photos of his drop bar Nexus 7sp internal hub bike. Now, in the 21st century we have the privilege of seeing both these new technologies ‘re-invented’ again. What’s on the horizon for these re-innovators, pneumatic tires perhaps?
