Say for some reason you really don’t want to wear a helmet but would like to at least have something on your head. That may be the reasoning behind Ribcap’s newest offering which comes in the form of a cycling cap. Ribcap started out with a number of winter hats that claim to offer an additional layer of protection thanks to viscoelastic protectors sewn into the layers of the hat.

Much like the winter offerings, the new cycling cap doesn’t claim to offer the same protection as a helmet but does offer something over a standard cap or nothing at all. If you’re the type to reach for a cycling cap instead of a helmet, the newest Ribcap may be of interest…

Unlike most of the Ribcap products, the cycling cap will be designed for warmer weather use so the cap uses a Coolmax internal lining along with splits in the fabric to act as “vents”. The cap will still include a stowable ear flap which combined with their nano fabric tech for water repellent will make the cap appeal to those in cooler, wetter weather as well.

Each cap includes a removable, adjustable chin strap. When not in use the caps fold into a small triangular shape that can easily be stashed in a bag or pocket.

ribcap (5)Is the Ribcap the next big thing in cycling protection? Probably not, but if it gets people that otherwise wouldn’t wear a helmet at all to wear something, that seems like a win. Ribcap cycling caps will be available starting next summer.

It also gets people who would normally wear a helmet deluding themselves into thinking they’re getting some protection and they don’t have to wear an ugly bulky helmet.

Is that a win? If you think the risk is negligible and think this looks less dorky than a helmet…yes…

All the great dorkiness without the bothersome protection. Win.

That really looks like something a person who is a fall risk or special needs would wear.

Why not grow a fro and tuck it up in a regular cycling cap? Is there really much of a difference? I’m going to wear another pair of arm warmers so I don’t break my elbow like a friend did recently…he only had one pair on.

That is utterly terrible. I hope the CPSC gets a hold of it and bans it stateside.

This is uglier than a helmet, offers less protection, what is the point?

Good for downhillers, nothing worth protecting anyway.

Looks a lot like what Yakkay has on offer.

Two downhillers on a cliff, one throws his helmet the other his cap. After going to the bottom one says ” see, the cap is better, it didn’t break”.

@r3a – it has the same function as an old school hairnet: it keeps the pieces of your skull more or less in place in order to make your body more easily identifiable

Will it have the same protection if worn backwards, or maybe sideways?

Did I miss the memo where cycling was declared terribly dangerous and required helmet wearing?

Lets see some crash testing results.

I also always enjoyed the argument where helmets give a rider more confidence making them ride with more risk. I wonder what false sense of security this would provide to riders who don’t normally wear a helmet.

Oli, don’t even get the helmet fanatics started. For them, they worship at the church of the foam helmet and will not listen to logical reason.

People bitch about wearing helmets because they look “dorky” fact is, helmets help to prevent head injuries. Know what looks “dorkier” than wearing a helmet? Sitting in a wheelchair drooling in your lap.
Several years ago, I went on a casual ride, one which Ive done lots of times, for some reason, I decided not to wear my helmet, wouldn’t you know, I had a huge, stupid crash. After plastic surgery and some re-hab, I returned back to normal…I think.
The choice is yours, to wear a helmet or not, but to say it looks dorky, is ridiculous.

This should be good for wearing while driving or taking the bus!

I don’t know which to laugh at more: the stereotyping old farts with a grudge against downhill bikers or the idiots who actually think they’re above wearing helmets. Why don’t you unbuckle your seatbelts as well, drink radium, bloodlet, and smoke 3 packs of unfiltered cigarettes a day.

I do not wear helmets when biking on a path with my kids. Nothing wrong with that. Why the heck would one need the same level of protection when pinning cross country downhill and when cruising down a paved bike path?

How about to be an example for your kids?

With around 700 cyclist road deaths and around 10,000 gun related homicides a year in the USA, It seems you are around 15 times more likely to be shot dead than killed whilst on your bike.
I presume you all wear bullet proof jackets when you’re out and about. Pretty dumb if you don’t…

I used road data as I guess you won’t be shredding the gnar out on the trails with this tea cosy on your head.
