Due to the impressive amount of CNC machining time, most narrow wide rings have a price that reflects the production costs. Sram wanted to create a replacement 1x ring for the cost conscious which meant they needed look to a different material – steel. Utilizing their stamping and manufacturing wizardry, the new steel rings are not only more affordable but they should be more durable as well.
Available in three select sizes, SRAM is offering a direct mount, plus an interesting looking 94 BCD ring as well…
Thanks to the increased strength of the steel, SRAM is able to press the ring for the proper offset and use open pockets for the chainring bolts. The 94 BCD chain ring pattern is available in 30 and 32t sizes, with the direct mount available only in 28t. All three rings use SRAM’s X-Sync Technology and are finished in black. SRAM points out that the direct mount ring comes only in a 6 mm offset which is not compatible with 30 mm spindle cranks that need a 0 offset. Also, you will need to use a SRAM chain to keep the warranty valid.
All 3 sizes will retail for a scant $19.99 each and according to SRAM, these will be the best performing chain rings at this price (only rings at this price?) and will be available this October.
