With winter knocking at the door, for Bontrager that means it’s time to add some new mythical creatures to the stable. We’re talking about fat bike tires, of course. After starting their collection with the Hodag and later the Barbegazi, Bontrager has two new fat bike tires that may just offer the grip that their fantastic names would imply…

Ok, technically the Narwhal is a real thing, even though they’re wild enough to be the creature of an active imagination. In this case, the Bontrager Gnarwhal is the name chosen for their first studded/studdable tire.  Fitted with 160 tungsten carbide Gnarwhal spikes, the tire uses a TLR tubeless ready casing with Bontrager’s Inner Strength sidewall protection. Offered only in 26×3.8″ at the moment, studdable tires (no studs included) sell for $119.99 a piece while the studded version jumps to $224.99 a piece.

The Rougarou enters as an interesting tire meant for firm snow or sand conditions or as a fat bike race tire. Using smaller profile knobs in the center with larger cornering knobs, the Rougarou is called the “fastest fat bike tire” to date which fits well with the race tire angle. Initially to be offered in 26×3.8″ with a TLR inner Strength casing, Rougarous will sell for $119.99.

Give me plus sized studded tires already (27.5×2.8″ is preferred…)!

Forget all these baby steps. Let’s just get to the 29er fat bike tires. 29×5 or 29×6 please

And yet no studded options for their fat 27.5 Farleys… Someone should lose their job over that one.

Those look great. I’ll be first in line…when they make a 4.8″. Still looking for that perfect wide profile, deep lug, studded, tubeless fattie tire. One tire to rule all (winter) conditions. If only 45 NRTH would make the Dillinger 5 in tubeless.

I thought Trek was pretty well committed to the 27.5″ platform for their 3.8″ tires?

Matt, I ran the 45 Nrth Dillinger 5’s set up tubeless all last winter without issue, and will again this year as well. It would be nice if they changed it to the TR bead, but it still works the way it is right now, and with a tubeless ready rim like the Mulefut there is No chance of pulling them off the bead at low pressure.

@alf bee – what can 45nrth sue about?

I own a Farley 9.8 which is Trek’s flagship fat bike. Yet tell me why there is no other 27.5″ tire options out there except for the Hodag? * Trek has failed me again* I think I only found one other tire manufacturer who makes a 27.5″ fat bike tire. If I would have know I would have bought a 26″ wheeled bike.

There’s a fatty I park next to that has Bontragers on it. It says on the wall 4.8″ which is utter dog $@#*! They’re obviously dwarfed by my 4.8 Surly Lou’s. Trek, Bontrager = ick

@Wolverine –> I own a Farley 9.6 with the 27.5X3.8 tire size as well. The great thing about our frames is we can run a 26X5 or 26X4 wheel/tire combo if we want. So even with Bontrager doesnt come out with much for the 27.5 wheel size, we can still get a sweet 26X4-5 setup. A little extra money for sure, but the bike still rocks.

All that said, I do want other tire options for 27.5X4 🙂

I assume 45Nrth suing was a joke because 45Nrth has ripped off the names of a bunch of punk bands and such for their products.

Andy, that tire is labled a 4.7″ and it is almost exactly the same casing size as the Dillenger 5. Both are close to 4.5″.

@Tyler-> Most frames that fit 26″x5″ tires can also fit Trek’s 27.5″x3.8″ tires, but few will be buying the 27.5″ wheels to switch over if even Trek isn’t releasing new tires for the size. Really surprised that Trek isn’t supporting their own product. You shouldn’t have to spend $3k+ on a bike and then another $1k+ on wheels just to have tires that fit.

Also $105 more for 160 studs is ridiculous! You can buy the already overpriced 45Nrth studs for half that price. If you want a studded Gnarwhal, buy the studs separately and pocket the savings.

I’m wondering what these will measure mounted. I’d love it if these were to fit my Stumpjumper 6Fattie. The Fox 34 maybe, the rear might be tight.

I have the Farley 9.8 with the 27.5×4.5 Barbegazi’s. Great Tire all season tire. Also the Gnarwahl 27.5 was on display at the Iceman Cometh Challenge expo. You can get them in March 2017, or if you pre ordered them, you would have had them around December 19th.

@Farley: is it possible to fit 27.5×4.5″ tires on 9.8?! They say it goes max with 3.8″
