First spotted as standard equipment on the new Canyon’s Fat Dude, DT Swiss’ entry into the world of fat bikes wasn’t without motivation. After partnering with Canyon to co-develop the wheelset,  close attention was paid to the weight using a cutout structure to remove every unnecessary gram. The result is a pair of aluminum fat bike wheels that are very close to the weight of some high end carbon hoops. Of course, the Big Ride or BR 2250s include standard DT Swiss quality in the spokes, nipples, and ratchet hub system as well.

Fresh off a stage win at the Snow Epic in Engelberg, get the details on the new BR2250 Classic wheels next…

There are a number of ways to approach fat bike rim design, but for the first DT Swiss options, cutouts were the way to go. Using a webbed cutout profile, DT Swiss claims they were able to maintain all of the rim’s structural integrity while keeping weight to a minimum. Each hoked aluminum rim has 32 optimized holes for the Pro Lock nipples, and an internal width of 76mm. The wheels are not listed as tubeless compatible, but we wouldn’t be surprised if you could make it work with a wide strip of Gorilla tape, especially given the aggressive looking bead locks.

When it comes to DT Swiss’ vote on axle standards, they have spoken – the BR 2250 Classic wheels will be available with a 150×15 front and 190/197×12 rear hub. Don’t be surprised if this is the way forward since 150×15 front hubs will work on both suspension and rigid forks, and the 190/197 rear standard allows for larger tires and can still be used with narrow q-factor fat bike cranks with the right chainring set up. We’re assuming this means DT Swiss will eventually have the hubs for sale separately which should make anyone looking for ratchet equipped, Centerlock fat bike hubs happy.

Listed with a total weight of 2235g, the BR 2250 Classics will retail for €869, or just under $1,000. Available soon.

I love DT Swiss – they are the standard.

bummer about the lack of a 170mm option.

how does one gorilla tape rims with cutouts & avoid having a sticky side exposed through the holes?

Use a fat bike rim tape first or any sturdy material. You can even use the same tape, just a little wider than the openings, face up.

@grog, You cover the other side with dirt.

@groghunter: Vinyl rim strip first and then the gorilla tape. Cheers!

@groghunter: I’ve also done it with a strip of backwards gorilla tape ( sticky side in), then do a strip of gorilla tape on top of that, so the sticky sides are together. That way you can have any color rim strip you want ( camo duct tape!). Then did a strip of stans tape on either edge of the gorilla tape up to the bead hook, and it worked wonderfully.

@Ben: Curious what all this tape weights?

@grog–put a fat bike rims trip in then tape over for air seal. By the way, we have been using 3M 8067 tape with fantastic results. Its 1/4 the weight of gorilla and seals much better. Its a builders air-sealing tape we get from local building supply. Check it out. 4″ wide version fits 100m rim perfect–for narrower rims twice around with the 2″ works well.

That is one beautiful rim. Still, I am curious why tubeless capability wasn’t directly addressed by DT Swiss. Fat tubes weigh a ton, so it seems kind of weird to spend all that effort on the rim design and then throw a big fat tube in there.

@edge I’m curious as well, though I imagine it’s got to be lighter than fat bike tubes.

@AbelF- Yes! So funny, ’cause it’s true…

Yeah I would like the 170 option too. Wonder if they will be compatible with the 36t start ratchet upgrade…

@W how does the 3M 8067 remove? Would think its a PITA to take off if you ever need to replace the tape or change a spoke or something.

Some local guys are using Scotch Clear Tough Duct Tape. It is way lighter than Gorilla Tape and doesn’t soak up sealant like Gorilla Tape does.

Here is a good write up on using that tape: http://cyclesinlife.com/tubeless-fatbike-conversion-update/

Specialized ultra light 2.3 tubes are super duper light….

@james: simply because most fat tires arent labeled tubeless ready, so they dont want to market them as tubeless without being sure that all tires will work. They save their a**es a bit.

Interesting in that DT Swiss makes reliable and robust products, but what they make is more focused on the reliable than the cutting edge. Which makes me wonder, how much more can be cut out of that rim and still be servicable?

They look so… SPECIALIZED! The rims are nearly identical. Nothing new here.

@EP, Since DT Swiss still makes a lot of parts for Specialized wheels, this is not so weird. 🙂
The rims look identical because I’m pretty sure they come from the same manufacturer.

The speciliazed rim is hookless and this one appear to have a hook. Does it have one?

For Tubeless, I had tried Gorilla but after 1 week it leaked. I use #M 3015 membrane now and no leak. And much lighter (only 40g per wheel + 60 g Orange seal).

Looks like the rim off a Specialized Fatboy

@Ep- Nothing new?? Setting aside that the rims look similar to SBC, a star ratchet based fatbike hub is certainly new, and for true cold weather riders, way past due!

@ Trudo: please specify the 3M tape you used – thanks.
