When you’re creating a product for the team that will very likely win the Tour de France, you don’t leave anything to chance. Even when it comes down to chain lube, Muc-Off wanted to create the absolute best product possible for Team Sky and Chris Froome. Typically, chain lube development includes a ton of testing which usually takes a lot of time, but more importantly numerous variables can make the process difficult.
To ensure a consistent result, while speeding up the process, Muc-Off created a robot Froome – or one of the most advanced chain lube dynos in existence and let it put in all the miles…
Calling it the C.L.O.D. or Chain Lube Optimization Dyno, the device went past just mounting the chain to a drivetrain. To ensure the most realistic measurements possible, first Muc-Off 3-d scanned the actual Pinarello frames and used that to build an aluminum “frame” to the exact dimensions. Then, drivetrain force was calculated off of Froome’s actual weight and power numbers and then fed through the system with the exact shift patterns used by Froome based on the data from his Shimano Di2 drivetrain. Using the dyno to test the lube in various conditions, hand made batches of chain lube we’re created from a blend of esters, oil-based lubrication, and pressure additives to create the ideal all conditions lubricant.
Now available to the public, the formula is said to provide one of the best blends of lubrication and protection which is good for around 200 miles per application in ideal conditions, or 120-150 miles in pouring rain. Each bottle will sell for $28 and the lube is UV light reactive to show where it has been applied to the chain.
